The Giants have agreed to sign Mike Morse, according to Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area (on Twitter). John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that it's a one-year deal for Morse, who will serve as the Giants' left fielder (Twitter link).

Phillies sign the artist formerly known as Fausto Carmona to a one year deal. Cubs were in on him and Theo said we had an offer out to one starting pitcher. I wonder if he was it.

I could see us signing Gavin Floyd soon

So Joba and Carmona are gone. I'm shocked no one wants to play for a crappy team that's just going to trade them in July.

It's almost as if trying to compete matters.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if a player is traded mid-season in the final year of their contract, their new team is not able to make a qualifying offer, correct? I would think someone like Joba or Gavin Floyd might not mind signing a one-year deal with a team like the Cubs in order to re-establish their value in an effort to get a multi-year deal the following offseason. Knowing the Cubs could likely trade them in July gives them two things:

1. A possible chance to play for a contender later in the season

2. No worries about a qualifying offer.

The latter is important as they won't have draft pick compensation attached to them the following offseason, which could make them a bit more appealing to other teams.

Gavin Floyd would be a Scott Baker situation. Had TJS on May 7th

And hopefully his rehab would go better than Baker and Vizcaino's, FFS.

And/or having money. That helps too.

True. He's probably not the best example. But someone who actually would be ready to pitch opening day or soon after would be a good candidate.

Royals about to sign Omar Infante for 4/30. Not outrageous, but the dollars are big enough and the Royals a small enough market that 4 years for a 32 year old would scare me.

With this the Royals will almost certainly have a higher payroll than the Chicago Cubs. I don't think he'll be an everyday guy by the end of the contract, but he should still be able to fake it at several positions that he's not a black hole in their budget.

Will this take them out of the Shark hunt, though? How much more room are they rumored to have? I know Samardzija isn't super expensive, but he's not cheap either for a team notorious for penny pinching.

Even after they trade Butler for nothing? Which most down here assume is happening next.

Didn't know Butler was potentially on the move.

That's what I keep hearing here. They were mentioning for nick Franklin and a prospect. It seems like they want to move him. Probably for money to spend on Shields.

They have a legitimate shot at running down the Tigers and/or playing in the Wild Card game. No team that has missed the playoffs for the past 28 seasons should be worried about not getting surplus value from Omar Infante.
