They must of valued/needed to dump salary just to get overall payroll down or for another move(s)? Fister only made like $4m last year, even in a big raise in arbitration he would have made maybe $8m this year, right?

Gotta think there is a Cano angle here. If the Tigers can move Kinsler (Yankees or Mets could absorb his salary), they would have the salary room to sign Cano.

But Fister doesn't stand in the way of that. This seems like a panic move. For Doug Fister they should easily have gotten Brian Goodwin.

At the very least they should have been able to get one of Clippard or Storen which actually addresses one of their team needs.

What the heck is Detroit doing? That's a horrible trade.

The Royals chances of making the playoffs just went up more tonight than they likely will all offseason. What a colossally stupid deal for Detroit. The Tigers just took a 5 win hit seemingly just to make a 7M salary dump.

Well, Smyly can step in and probably be very good in Fister's place, but that still doesn't excuse giving away a highly valuable asset.

@RedSox #RedSox today announced that club will not tender 2014 contracts to Andrew Bailey and Ryan Kalish.

Just also thought of this....

Could it be that Illich is dumping to sell the team? The guy is 84 years old, so....

So what would be the point of selling the team? So he could really enjoy his 90s?

I wouldn't know, I just threw it out there.

The rumors when they signed Fielder was that he was willing to up the budget because he was getting old and wanted to win before he died.

Right, I'd believe that. But now Fielder is gone, and Fister is gone....

I've looked around long enough at neutral baseball message boards to conclude that the entire baseball world is now chortling at the Tiggers. Not many people likes this trade for them.

A's trade Jemile Weeks to Baltimore for Jim Johnson

I really like this deal from the O's perspective. They dump a reliever who was going to make 10M and get a 2B who has underperformed in his very brief career, but still has legitimate upside.

Wonder if that means the O's don't bother with Roberts this offseason. Depending on how things shake out he'd make a perfect bridge to Baez/Alcantara if the dollars fit.

EDIT: Probably means the A's are not exactly dying to ship off Anderson for the cost savings either.

No interest in Roberts. Not much anyway. I think the opposite on Anderson though. Adding 11 mill on Kazmir and 10 or so for Johnson is a big deal for them. I hope we get Anderson, I think he'll come cheap.

What an odd move for Oakland. Johnson is very good, but he'll still get more than he's worth due to the closer tag.

Yeah, I'm not sure I get it. Why not just sign Mujica? He might be looking for several years, but I bet his 1 year price is shy of 10 million.

Maybe I'm completely off here, but wouldn't Detroits return for Fister be the equivalent of Kyle Hendricks, Logan Watkins, and maybe Ben Wells or Zach Cates? If we're trying to get >W's with <$, Fister would have been a sweet acquisition at that price.
