Cubs, Royals talking Collins, Crow- Royals prefer to move Hochevar and his 5+M, Cubs seem interested in Crow above all...

They are talking about Lorenzo Cain too, if my source is correct.

Samardzija and Barney for Cain, Crow and 2 pitching prospects (no names given to me).

Sounds terrible.

Cain is a pretty good get, and while I'm not as big a fan of Crow as some other KC pen options, he's got a decent track record(he's also a good guy to get Bosio's hands on). As long as one of Ventura or Zimmer are involved, I'll probably be good with a deal like that.

EDIT: And I don't know if he still counts as "pitching prospect", but Duffy would be more than okay too.

Just a guy saying stuff.

I just don't see the point of dealing Shark right now...so far, I have yet to hear a name that has the possibility of turning into something as good as Shark down the road.

Those better be really good pitching prospects.

I think I'd be OK with Duffy and Almonte. Prefer that to Zimmer, would love to get Ventura though.

Yeah...I was shocked at how valuable Cain has been. Almost as shocked as I was when I looked up Gentry.

Still, one of those pitching prospects better be involved.

I don't mind that deal if those prospects are two of Zimmer, Ventura and Amonte. Louis Coleman is an interesting name too I wouldn't mind swapped in for Crow. Also has one more year of control.

Cain for his career

2010 - MIL - 1.1 WAR in 43 games

2011 - KC - only played 6 games, but 0 WAR

2012 - KC - 1.6 WAR in 61 games

2013 - KC - 2.6 WAR in 115 games

For his career he's at 5.4 WAR in 225 games.. or a 150 game pace of 3.6 WAR

I'm not a fan of giving up assets for players who provide nothing with their bat.

Either the deal involves one of Zimmer and Ventura and hopefully Almonte and then Cain is basically a really valuable throw-in (along with Crow), or it doesn't and the deal is horse [expletive].

Yep. Our offense is bad enough.

Net runs are net runs.

The FO moving Samardzija has never been about getting a valuable offensive piece in the first place. If one happens to be thrown in, all the better.

Also, Cain actually does have intriguing offensive upside. He's been injured a bit prior to this season, and I think the reason he missed so many games this season was because he started the year on the DL, but he actually has the offensive capability of putting up a solid season for a player whose primary value comes from defense. I don't think it's out the realm of possibility for him to put up a season at his peak like .280/.340/.420 with 10-15 homers and 20-30 SB. He's just gotta be healthy.

Cain in 2013 was certainly bad at the plate, but there's also reason to think that he's a better hitter than his 2013.

MiLB: .294/.367/.431/.797

MLB pre-2013: 425 PA: .281/.327/.412/.739

MLB 2013: 442 PA: .251/.310/.348/.658

So if he's 2013 Cain going forward, he's a touch below average and more of a 4th OF type. If he's pre-2013 Cain, he's pretty much healthy Peter Bourjos and a 3 win CF. Somewhere in between and he's a touch above league average. As the 2a or 3rd best player in a deal, I'm good with taking that risk if the front office believes in him.

WAR is great and all, but offensive value is much easier to calculate. Cain is basically Darwin Barney of CF, which I'm not particularly interested in.

Except Cain is much better at being valuable.

ABTY:

Cubs, Royals zeroed in on each other right now- lots of names thrown around... Royals like Junior Lake quite a bit, could be as simple as a one for one or two for one...
