Any interest in Cole Hamels? Phillies are supposedly "shopping" him and Cliff Lee.

5 years at $22.5M per.

Age 30

Jeff Samardzija and Jorge Soler for Lee, Hamels and Dom Brown. Cubs take on all of the salary. Who says no first?

Does Tom Ricketts declaring bankruptcy and jumping off a bridge count as a no?

If you trade Jackson and Schierholtz/Villanueva afterwards you're still hovering around 100 million in payroll.

My hate for Dom Brown is really clouding my judgment of that trade.

I'd do that deal, but I doubt the Cubs do. If the Mariners/Jack Z are really looking to make some significant moves, what about something like Paxton, Ackley, Brad Miller and Hultzen/Maurer for Hamels, Lee, Rollins and Brown with the Mariners taking on all salary.

I think the Phils/Mariners match up well in some variation of that trade whether it's all or some of those guys from the Phillies and they have the money (apparently) and the prospects to make something happen.

9:25am: Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports (via Twitter) that one potential Trumbo package that has been discussed would send both Cahill and Skaggs to the Angels, which would seem to be a tremendous haul for the right-handed slugger.

This is either false or Towers should be put in a room with padded walls. Cahill AND Skaggs for a guy who hits home runs but does nothing else notable?

FWIW, I saw this exact same rumor somewhere on the Twitters and also on BBTN last night.

Let's send them Rizzo for that package...

Well, Cahill had a pretty down year this year and Skaggs probably isn't very good anymore, FWIW.

At least we can take solace in the fact that if Baez or Bryant have too many Ks to be stars at the big league level, some lunatic like Towers or Jack Z will pay through the nose to add a few home runs even if they aren't good at literally anything else.

That's gonna make me extremely sad if the Cubs can't work out a Shark deal with them.

Same, though if I had to guess it's more Towers not valuing Shark than it is our FO not trying to make something work with them. Gets back to not understanding how on earth Towers values players whether it's his own he moves for less value that most think he could get or giving up way more for some guy he falls in love with/places value on that nobody knows how he actually derives that value.

Trumbo has been worth 2.8, 2.7, and 2.2 WAR and will be 28 in January

Rizzo has been worth 2.3 and 2.6 WAR and will be 25 in August

Obviously Rizzo is better and has a better future, however, everyone thinks that Cahill and Skaggs is a ridiculous trade for Trumbo, but, objectively, it's more of a match for Rizzo--maybe they throw in a lower level prospect. 1B is a fairly easily replaceable position. At the end of the day, it would be tough to give up on Rizzo this early because of all of the potential, but this is probably his value at the current time. That being said, Theo & Jed won't do it because they clearly love the guy.

While Arizona may have been mentioned more than just about anyone else, in regards to Shark, a deal headlined by Skaggs has never been all that exciting. In fact, if Delgado wasn't included as well, I wouldn't be very happy with a deal with them at all. Because Towers has been very adamant that Bradley is going no where.

@keithlaw Hearing Skaggs-Trumbo discussion now includes White Sox possibly getting Adam Eaton, sending Hector Santiago to Angels

Between Trumbo for Skaggs/Eaton(or Santiago, depending on the POV), Holmberg/Bell for flotsam, and Bourjos for Freese, I'm starting to get pretty irritated with Towers and DiPoto.

Cubs source told me that Theo/Jed are telling each executive a different story regarding Samardzija's price and availability just to keep everybody guessing as to their true intentions.

One executive told the source that Theo told him that the Cubs are looking for a cost controlled corner OF and a high ceiling catching prospect in return for Samardzija, and that they plan to dangle Jorge Soler to acquire the multiple top pitching prospects they seek.

Every team is probably attempting some sort of FUD campaign.

I like this rumor. If Theo isn't blown away by any offers this winter for Samardzija, hold him. Approach Pittsburgh for a summer deal if they will package Reese McGuire and Josh Bell.

Crow, Hochevar, Zimmer and Almonte for Samardzija and Barney.

This deal seems like it would take Arizona out of the Samardzija market.

You never know what will happen and it only takes one team to really want him, but it really doesn't seem like the market is shaking out in such a way as to get the Cubs want they want for Samardzija. Holding on to him and trying again in the summer seems likely, and I don't hate that.

They are talking about Lorenzo Cain too, if my source is correct.

Samardzija and Barney for Cain, Crow and 2 pitching prospects (no names given to me).

Those better be really good pitching prospects.
