i kinda hope that maddux makes it and then like two years after his enshrinement, it comes out that he was basically using more roids than turn-of-the-century barry bonds. just to watch the meltdowns from the bill plaschke types who voted him in as the "only clean player."

More votes for Morris than Mussina is criminal

Yes, though neither should get in IMO

Do you think Schilling or, especially, Glavine should get in? Because if you do then Mussina should be in, he's better than Glavine in almost every measurable stat that's not wins. Schilling and Mussina compare to be pretty close to each other.

Just looking at Mussina's stats. He was top 6 in CYA voting 9 times. Impressive.

He more than meets my credentials to get in. 82.3 career fWAR puts him at 19th ALL TIME for pitchers.

Not sure what to think about him since I tend to lean on the "small hall" side of things, but I'm not beyond persuasion though. I'd certainly have him above Morris.

Was Mussona ever considered one of the best in his era? Did he dominate for any stretch? He had a great career, but is he Hall of Fame or Hall of Very Good?

From 95-03 his fWAR was between 4.7 and 6.9 every season. All but one year under 5, 4.7 (02'), twice went over 6, 00' (6.2) and 01' (6.9). He was inside the top 12 in the league in fWAR all 9 of those years, top 10 in 7 of 9, top 6 in 5 of the 9, and top 5 in 4 of the 9. Had the highest WAR for AL pitchers by both Fangraphs and BBR standards in 2001.

Like I said, by my standards he's in. Depending on you standards I can see how he skews towards the hall of very good and not hall of fame. But if you believe Morris, Glavine and to a lesser extent Schilling should be in, Mussina should be in by whatever standards you are using for those guys.

He was a better pitcher than Glavine, but nobody really noticed because he was on Orioles teams that weren't ever famous and he was by himself there. The "Hall of Very Good" crap is exactly the meatballish thought I expected from the voters.

I meant it rhetorically and not specifically targeted at you. It was in reference to the ESPN votes article having all 3 of those guys with more votes than Mussina. Do you think any of those 3 belong? On a side note.

was mussina hall of very good or hall of great or hall of excellent or hall of best or hall of superlative?

Let's play a game. Assume you are a GM. How many players on this year's ballot would you have traded Lee Smith for in an instant? I count at least 20.

http://deadspin.com/greg-maddux-will-not-be-a-unanimous-hall-of-famer-1496300490

I was driving on Saturday just prior to the start of the first NFL games (and coincidentally on this highway 10 minutes before this happened)

http://cdnl.complex.com/m.php/CHANNEL_IMAGES/CITY_GUIDE/2014/01/majordeegan.jpg

Everybody in the car was asleep and I was scanning the sports channels to listen to the start of the game when I stumbled upon this conversation:

Caller - "I just wanted to discuss what you were saying about the Hall of Fame earlier."

Host - "What about it?"

Caller - "How can you say Maddux does not belong in the Hall.."

Host- "Wait, I didn't say he isn't a Hall of Famer, what I said was he's not a first ballot Hall of Famer. There is a difference."

And that is just another example why everything about all Hall of Fame discussions is stupid.

Don't really see why that's "meatballish" (God I hate that [expletive] term, it's gotten to the point of "hipster" around here). Either you think he deserves to be in or you don't.

It's meatballish because it's an ignorant way to explain away why someone forgot he was that good.

Like I said a couple posts up, Lee Smith was voted into the HOF recently, and I'd take at least 20 people from this ballot over him, as much as I liked him as a player.

Lee Smith wasn't voted in, and is unlikely to make it shy of the vets committee. He still has way more support than he should given the alternatives

Maddux won't be a unanimous selection because of this guy

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/greg-maddux-won-t-unanimous-pick-hall-fame-165153925--mlb.html

Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, who covers the Los Angeles Dodgers, voted only for Jack Morris.

Morris has flaws -- a 3.90 ERA, for example. But he gets my vote for more than a decade of ace performance that included three 20-win seasons, Cy Young Award votes in seven seasons and Most Valuable Players votes in five. As for those who played during the period of PED use, I won't vote for any of them.

He should be put up against a wall and shot.
