Another MLB.com voter voted for Palmeiro because he "was a marvel before he got caught doping". But not Bonds or Clemens.

That's crazy - considering it's the norm for so many pitchers to land on the DL throughout their careers

Maddux won't be a unanimous selection because of this guy

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/greg-maddux-won-t-unanimous-pick-hall-fame-165153925--mlb.html

Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, who covers the Los Angeles Dodgers, voted only for Jack Morris.

Morris has flaws -- a 3.90 ERA, for example. But he gets my vote for more than a decade of ace performance that included three 20-win seasons, Cy Young Award votes in seven seasons and Most Valuable Players votes in five. As for those who played during the period of PED use, I won't vote for any of them.

Gurnick figured out how to get his 15 minutes of fame.

So apparently he said he will never vote again. Great. But then this:

JIM BOWDEN @JimBowdenESPNxm

Ken Gurnick told us one of the reasons he will never vote again is that he would NOT have voted for Mariano Rivera either b/c of era XM 89

How is this guy a real person?

He looks like [expletive] Don Knotts

Jim Callis ‏@jimcallisMLB 14m

My 10-man ballot, listed alphabetically: Bagwell, Biggio, Bonds, Clemens, Glavine, Maddux, Piazza, Schilling, Thomas, Trammell ...

Jim Callis ‏@jimcallisMLB 13m

Would have voted for these guys but ran out of room: Kent, Martinez, McGwire, Mussina,

Palmeiro, Raines, Sosa (also listed alphabetically)

Jim Callis ‏@jimcallisMLB 12m

Of course, I don't actually have a HOF ballot. Apparently writing about baseball for 25 years doesn't make me a baseball writer.

Glavine over Mussina makes no sense to me as I've previously stated. Switch Glavine and Mussina and my 10 man ballot would be the same as Callis'

Except Glavine won two CYA, and had really good postseason (especially WS) numbers, which counts more for some.

Kind of before my time as far as following transactions go, but does anyone remember or know about the Cubs letting Maddux slip to free agency back in 92? Seems like someone you would want to lock up if at all possible. Dawson left that same offseason, so it doesn't seem like we'd have been too strapped for cash to bring him back.

Larry Himes led that debacle, Maddux won the CY in '92 too.

Jack Morris' career ERA+ is 105. Only two guys in the HOF have worse: Catfish Hunter at 104 and Rube Marquad at 103.

If Jack Morris gets in, it'll be because of one game, which just goes to show the hypocrisy of the baseball writers.

Both of who clearly got in based on awesome names that Jack Morris lacks.

On Rube:

He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971. His selection has often been criticized by the sabermetrics community, since Marquard's career adjusted ERA+ was only slightly better than league average. Bill James described Marquard as "probably the worst starting pitcher in the Hall of Fame." Marquard had been interviewed for the popular baseball book, The Glory of Their Times, in the early 1960s, and his chapter is thought to be one of the primary reasons for his election. However, most of the stories that he "recounted" were later found to be false.

Baseball writers are idiots; I'm not sure why anyone is surprised.

The only player from this era that has any chance of being elected unanimously is St. Jeter, because Yankee Magic and dynasty and ball flip. And I bet there will be some jackass who will pull the same crap that Don Knotts up there did to get his name talked about for a week.

MLB Network has a panel of writers/broadcasters/whoevers on debating the HoF. In the last segment, they revealed what their ballot was (or would be if they had a vote). Outside of Maddux/Glavine/Thomas, Jack [expletive] Morris had the most votes from the panel

I seem to recall Himes being real pissy with Maddux when he decided to test the market and field some offers. I think Himes set a deadline. Maddux went over by a day or so but ultimately wanted to sign with the cubs but Himes pulled the offer.

As for the hall. How can anyone justify Morris as a HoF guy?

Piazza? I'm guessing he is an assumed juicer in their minds.

Maddux had wanted to sign early, but Himes didn't show much interest, if I remember correctly. Once it became apparent we were dragging our feet, the Yankees put on a full court press for him. The Braves jumped in late and Maddux took less to go there, for a better chance at winning. Not positive, but this is what I think happened.

one of my high school baseball coaches played in the minor leagues and was in spring training with maddux one year. he claimed that maddux told everyone that at one point before signing with the braves, he and the cubs came to terms on a deal only to have the cubs call him like an hour before he was supposed to come over and sign the contract that they had changed their minds and the offer was off the table.

my coach was kind of a weirdo though so this might not be true.
