Wtf were they doing signing Edwin Jackson then?

I think they did that, expecting to do more this year, but got scared off by Castro and Rizzo not making strides. So, they took a step back, since payroll is an issue with us and they didn't want to box themselves in.

@ davell

No way. If you're going to crawl into a hole just because one signing doesn't yield instant gold, MLB front office is not where you belong

That is a frightening concept.

I'm not saying I agree with it. But doesn't it fit directly with Theo saying they "jumped the gun" on Edwin?

I think it has more to do with the fact that they figured the renovations would start and they would have a bigger cushion by now to go out and make more signings this offseason.

$25-30m less? It's kind of hard to compare total dollar amount if you believe the report that the Yankees were the only team willing to add a 7th year on. If the Cubs were offering 6/$130 ($21.6m annually), and the Yankees 7/$155 ($22.1m annually) its definitely not as significant as a shortage..

If they both included 4 year opt outs it's pretty significant to have an extra 25M guaranteed if your arm falls off

Kaplan still claims the Cubs weren't outbid.

I would think the 4 year opt out would have been a huge problem for the Cubs. Having your hopeful ace leave 2 years before your big TV contract is up would be an issue.

Also I would think the marketing value of playing on a contender immediately and the New York market could be a huge difference both here and in Japan.

@philgrogers: @pgammo has a good track record on @Cubs. On Tanaka, he says they lacked "the cash to finish it, and knew they were not seriously in it.''

Saw one report we were at 150 million. The Dodgers were roughly around the same, they said no way to a No-Trade clause and he balked at it and went to the Full no trade clause and 4 year opt out. The guy did pretty damn well for himself.

With due respect, I don't think Gammons has known anything for a long while now. I put literally no stock in anything he says at this point.

Isn't Rogers the one who reported that the Cubs had been at around $150M earlier today?

I wouldn't be so quick to brush off what he would know about this FO.

Then again, he said Nomar wasn't going anywhere after the trade had already pretty much been made...and this FO was involved.

Meh, he still has his head up Theo's ass from his Boston days. I wouldn't be surprised if his sources are legit.

With Gammons being really tight with Theo, I do trust him, even if he is senile.

"NOMAR ISN'T GOING ANYWHERE"

BREAKING - NOMAR TRADED TO THE CUBS

Posted

They pretty much went balls out and pulled out everything they can think of for Tanaka to woo him

-Cashman said video was in part like 'MTV Cribs', showing Tanaka the home clubhouse at the Stadium.

-Part of Yanks' meeting with Tanaka was a video with graphics on how they project his stuff to play in Yankee Stadium

-So Matsui not only called Tanaka, he appeared in a recruiting video the Yanks showed Tanaka, too.

That has a lot to do with it, and a million other things he's been wrong or off base about over the past decade.

-Likely offered him the most lucrative contract.
