It's always felt realistic. The deadline is approaching though, which is probably skewing your perception.

I think what's skewing his perception is all of the Cubs/Tanaka chatter of the last couple of days combined with the other big rumor...but that's just me.

There's suddenly a lot of Cubs chatter *and* there's good reasons why all the other big teams might be out:

Yankees - Thanks to Rodriguez suspension, actually have a chance to reset luxury tax.

Angels - Keep insisting they aren't really in

Dodgers - May have finally reached their limit with Kershaw extension

None of those things are actually surprises. All of them were already known. I think it is more fans just not thinking the Cubs are going to do anything.

What?

The Kershaw extension wasn't done until yesterday and came pretty much out of nowhere in terms of timing (i.e. pretty sure nobody knew if it would happen before Tanaka's deadline or not).

The Yankees getting bailed out of the ARod money was very very much in question.

I hadn't seen it elsewhere on here, but the Dodgers' mega TV deal was finally given official approval. Not that I think it played too large a role, but it could've been the final push to get Kershaw done.

What I hate about the Kaplan piece is that it reads exactly like a "Let's get Cubs fans excited about our chances at Tanaka (right before the convention, no less) while downplaying their chances at the same time to set up for another 2nd place finish" thing...am I the only one that got that vibe from that one?

I mean, Kaplan usually is just putting out what Crane wants him to put out.

I said it before, I think the Cubs will get him because their need is greatest. The Ricketts family will find the money. They cannot continue to miss out on theses opportunities. I suppose they can but it will only confirm what is already believed.

I didn't actually read it because it's Kaplan.

The writing was on the wall with that one a long time ago.

You're more in the area so you probably have a better idea than I do, but I didn't get that impression.

In fact, it seemed like everyone was resigned to the "the yankees are going to blow past the luxury tax threshold" idea at this point.

Not that "people in the know" are involved, but the Yankees fans I talk to were all convinced ARod would be off the books for 2014 and the Yankees would do whatever it took to reset the threshold.

What if its not about money? I can easily see(kind of expect) him winding up on the West Coast, getting his 100 million and not worrying if he left 20 mill or so on the table. Just think thats where he wants to be.

That said, even if it IS the case, its our JOB to convince him otherwise. We need him more than anyone else. As a great man once said, "everybody has a price". To get to his, if we had to pay 40 mill more than the next team, for instance? Screw it, I'm in.

What has Marlin Bystro or whatever said about Tanaka? I thought he was the more reliable guy.

He said that he didn't think the LA teams were serious about Tanaka a couple of days ago.

And yesterday he said this, while being asked if the rumored Fox deal was having an impact on Tanaka stuff picking up:

I think the offer has always been there. My stance is Tanaka's position may have changed with the LA teams not being as heavily involved as initially advertised. Still have the Yankees out there though.

He's said that they are fairly confident and are clearly one of the top bidders.

Has he posted again recently? The fairly confident part sounds new to me.

He did say they wouldn't be outbid a while back.

He doesn't think the LA teams are serious. He's worried about the Yanks, but definitely thinks we have a shot.

He might have a preference but I think the West Coast thing is way overblown. He's coming to America to play baseball and make lots of money. If he was worried about where he was going to play I think he would have stayed in Japan.

If the money is equal, his location preference may factor in. That's why the Cubs are going to give him the best contract.

I'm not even sure the whole "west coast preference" thing is real. Sounds more like speculation to me. Even if his wife did say it - doesn't mean it's really a factor.

Remember when Mike Hampton snubbed us because of the schools in Denver?

#Cubs are "major players" for Tanaka. One source would be "surprised if they DON'T get him."

I still think Tanaka gonna be tough to get, but these guys were pretty optimistic. So we've got that going for us . . . which is nice.

Julie DiCaro ‏@JulieDiCaro 6m

I've also been told the #Cubs have "scouted Tanaka to death" and are "all in."

Julie DiCaro ‏@JulieDiCaro 5m

Anyhoo, just passing that along. Don't yell at me if it doesn't pan out. #Cubs #Tanaka

FWIW, this source has been very good to me in the past. Very accurate.

Who the hell is that Julie? I'm guessing Kyle was being sarcastic? I don't wanna get excited til Kyle is legitimately excited.

She's a Chicago reporter. I can't remember where now, but she's been all over the place.

I'm legit excited, but probably prematurely.
