So if you wanted an indicator of how this offseason is going...

In the roster discussion thread we're discussing whether Tanaka's wife wants to be Posh Spice.

In the Tanaka thread we're talking about when Japanese women hit menopause.

The most active thread in weeks is about Clark the Cub.

Slowest offseason ever.

If you think the offseason is slow, just wait till the season starts.

Jesus shut the [expletive] up already

I'm sorry that a post about reality interrupted your fantasies about Japanese women and baseball mascots.

It's got nothing to do with that. It's pretty easy to look in a thread at this point and figure when it's time for the "witty" B2B one liner about we're going to suck. The only thing I don't have down yet is you're pretty random at including the laughing smilie at your own stuff about as much as a league average NBA 3 point shooter.

You may not like where we're at(Other than Arguello, no one is) but it is what it is, finding ANYTHING to talk about is a good thing. Especially if it's original, even if it's offbase.

It's also pretty darn predictable that whatever I post, "certain people" are going to make a personal comment about me. I do find it interesting that when others post about how bad the Cubs are going to be, those "certain people" don't respond in the same way.

@#$#@$ I want this so bad.

I wish all FA chases had a deadline this. Nine days, no matter what.

What is the general consensus of the board on Cubs competitiveness in 2015 if Tanaka is signed and Shark is extended?

Would still need some good development and more outside help, but looks a lot more doable than without him.

Depends a lot on Rizzo, Castro, Baez, Bryant, etc...

But I could say the same for 2014 in that scenario.

That would be a solid rotation with a really good bullpen. A lot of the offense depends on those wildcards (and really, those are things we need to go well for the future of the team in general)

What would everyone be comfortable paying Tanaka? Would 6/$120 be ok? He'd be 31 when the contract ended. Or do people think the Dodgers are going to go in at like 10/$250 and blow everyone out of the water.

7/$150. Maybe even a little higher if we have to fight off the Yankees and Dodgers. I just want him bad. He makes 2014 much more exciting, adding him to the possibility of Baez and Bryant being up some time this year too.

Who knows. 8/$200 wouldn't bother me at this point.

Some internal bias is telling me you are hinting out what you've been told since you've been told it. This leads me to believe the possible news is a mega TV deal ahead of most people's perceived schedule.

Let's say it is 7/$150. The Cubs payroll would still be less than $100M this year. Really no excuse for the Cubs not to win the bidding war besides #poortomricketts

I don't particularly care about the length, and I'd pretty easily give him 25 million AAV including the posting fee. At extreme lengths(8-10 years) and beyond that AAV I have to think harder about it.

I saw teams expect him to get 140 now, plus the fee. I'm the wrong person to ask, because I'd go balls out. If it takes 175, I'm in. There aren't 25 year old guys out there hitting FA with his upside, he pushes us closer to contention, I'm all in.

If the Dodgers offered him 250? Gotta admit, I'd laugh, tip my cap, then probably cry.

If they did land Tanaka....would you guys want to extend Shark, or look to move him for younger arms, like Toronto??

Like I said before, I'd be pretty comfortable photocopying Soriano's contract and giving it to Tanaka. 8 years, 136 mil.

You've been told the same thing too. So now I feel pretty comfortable, if it's true. There is no reason the Cubs shouldn't feel comfortable that they simply won't be outbid. While the news isn't "player related". That doesn't mean it still couldn't lead to being able to sign Tanaka. You know, just as a side effect of having huge money.

If the Cubs got a mega TV deal. I'd switch from Prospect porn watcher to "[expletive] it, sign all the players". Tanaka + Shark to lead the pitching staff sounds really really nice. If the Cubs get big money, I want them to throw it around. I like Shark and want to keep him here.

I said 8/$200m on Tanaka other times this offseason. I mean, what else are we going to spend it on?

All we're going to do if we don't get Tanaka is just keep saying "We don't want to overpay for guys past their primes" and whiffing.

Probably keep him at least for this year and see how it goes.

Renovations would bring in revenue too...

Yeah. I can't see getting a discount early so I change my answer.

Let the next year or two play out, see what he is, and then decide.
