@BNightengale: The #Dodgers have let it be known they plan to go all-out in their efforts to sign Tanaka, saying they and certainly won't be out-bid.

@BNightengale: The #Dodgers, while confirming their interest in Tanaka, say they won't spend wildly on him, particularly with Kershaw about to hit FA
2:40 pm today.

For me, that would earn an unfollow.

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Masahiro Tanaka's preferred designations "going in" to negotiations are Los Angeles, New York and Boston.

It's obvious that he prefers a big market, which is good because most of the teams capable of bidding on him are in big markets. Ultimately, though, Tanaka is likely going to go where the money takes him, so Shea's report probably doesn't mean a whole lot. The Dodgers, Cubs, Yankees, Mariners and Diamondbacks are among the teams expected to pursue the Japanese right-hander.

Well, Theo needs to call their bluff and make them pay a ridiclous price.

Yes - I want to either win Tanaka, or feel that the team who did win him drastically overpaid.

Great, we've managed to effectively trick everyone into thinking we're not a major market.

Maybe we can get us one of them competitive balance picks this year.

if we do they'll just change the rules and make them all in the 41st round

I know you kid, but...yeah. That's where we are now.

Marlin was asked if he had heard anything new on Tanaka:

Good point.

Nothing really that isn't already out there. I'm cautiously optimistic about our chances. Clearly the Cubs are going to present a big offer and it will take a great sales pitch after that.

Wait.

Nobody actually thinks we're still getting him, right? Just making sure.

Well, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility, but other team's chances sure seem to be better than the Cubs at this point.

They've done everything they can to position themselves as a team who was interested and did the right thing to let some other team overpay for him. This used to be known as the MacPhail Maneuver, but Epstein is making it his own.

I think the Cubs will make the high offer. I also think he'll probably sign somewhere else anyway.

Time for Theo and Jed to earn their money and sign Tanaka. I'm not real optimistic, but at the same time I'm hoping that Theo will make it happen.

Keep going. I like your style. This worked wonders last year with prospects.

If the Cubs give the highest bid and it is significantly higher than then next highest bid, he will be a Cub.

If the Cubs give the highest bid and it is only relative to the next highest bid and he chooses to go elsewhere it will be the Cubs fault for not making themselves an attractive enough destination.

Guys should want to come to Chicago and play. I'm not all that fired up about Tanaka, but they almost have to get him at this point.

I'm thinking the Dodgers are probably the lead dog in this race-unlimited $$$, huge Asian population, already a winning ballclub, endless promo possibilities. They'll lose Kershaw next year(didn't he turn down a $300M extension). They could sign Tanaka and acquire David Price from Tampa and be much better off-younger and $$$ savings.

Once Tanaka signs, Jed and Theo will try to move Shark to those who were interested.

I think we're set on waiting until the deadline for Samardzija. Our demands are getting laughed at right now, so they'll gamble and hope someone gets desperate.

Tanaka evidently is back in Japan. Met with teams, but didn't leave LA, to tour cities.

It's been really enjoyable seeing how many people here are willing to pretend they have even the faintest clue how this will turn out.
