What is the general consensus of the board on Cubs competitiveness in 2015 if Tanaka is signed and Shark is extended?

I think the middle of the road expectation would be that with a good offseason(likely adding a strong outfielder, maybe SP and/or RP help), that team would be a playoff contender.

Who knows. 8/$200 wouldn't bother me at this point.

Some internal bias is telling me you are hinting out what you've been told since you've been told it. This leads me to believe the possible news is a mega TV deal ahead of most people's perceived schedule.

Holy [expletive] you are Rain Man

You've been told the same thing too. So now I feel pretty comfortable, if it's true. There is no reason the Cubs shouldn't feel comfortable that they simply won't be outbid. While the news isn't "player related". That doesn't mean it still couldn't lead to being able to sign Tanaka. You know, just as a side effect of having huge money.

Renovations would bring in revenue too...

Man it's easy to get you to spill the beans, it really is. Well either you desperately want to spill the beans, or this is a clever diversion tactic. I don't know you well enough to know which it is. I still want it to be a huge TV deal. Eh I'll admit I don't care what it is, I just want the Cubs to have a lot of money and be like "SURPRISE! We have tons of money, and we want to welcome Masahiro Tanaka to the Chicago Cubs!"

If they did land Tanaka....would you guys want to extend Shark, or look to move him for younger arms, like Toronto??

Probably keep him at least for this year and see how it goes.

Yeah. I can't see getting a discount early so I change my answer.

Let the next year or two play out, see what he is, and then decide.

Yeah, that would make the most sense. Unless Toronto decided to all of a sudden offer up both Sanchez and Stroman, or some other crazy deal popped up.

Eh, now that I think of it, renovations isn't really "seismic". Unless they were completely tearing town Wrigley and rebuilding it while they play elsewhere for a couple years. I wouldn't guess they'd do that though.

He actually had him when he said he would count on his unusual strength to save him. Or at least he was half way there. Put it this way, if I stop I die, so I'll keep going.

Thanks, it's hard enough trying to have a meeting, while typing on here inconspiculously. Just lost it with this though. I'm super professional.

Marlin Bystro, in response to whether the rumored Fox stuff is having an impact on our offer to and ability to go after Tanaka

I think the offer has always been there. My stance is Tanaka's position may have changed with the LA teams not being as heavily involved as initially advertised. Still have the Yankees out there though.

I am just going to put this here and start celebrating early.

As much [expletive] you money as the Dodgers may have, if they're trying to lock up Kershaw by Friday at around 300 mill, I have a hard time seeing them giving Tanaka 150. That'd be 600 mill for their top 3 starting pitchers. Not to mention, they like Price a bunch. Maybe they wait Tampa out and go hard after him instead of Tanaka.....

Yeah, even for the Dodgers, the marginal utility becomes a little questionable. Tanaka and Kershaw would push them in the 250s or 260s in payroll, and once they ink Kershaw their top 3 starters will be under control for at least the next 5 years.

I do remember the 2012-13 season ticket holder conference call when Theo alluded to a huge offseason spending-wise when the first wave of prospects is hitting. I'm still hoping that this supposed news is a huge windfall of money (has to be a TV deal) that leads to moves this trade deadline and next offseason to fill the holes you've mentioned.

I wonder how the Kershaw extension affects the Dodgers interest in Tanaka and Tanaka's in the Dodgers?

Also, this from Jayson Stark at the owner's meetings a couple hours ago...

Brought up the name, "Tanaka," to 2 people at owners meetings this morning. They both had the same response: Beware of the Cubs.

Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal

Sources tell me and @jonmorosi that #Dodgers still want another SP. Tanaka an ownership call. Arroyo on short list of possible alternatives.

Sure, they want another SP. Everyone does. But that's an insane amount of money to heap on 2 arms, even for the Dodgers.

Does everything need to be signed off on, finalized (physical, etc.) on/before the 27th (I think that's it) date? Or just terms agreed to? If it's the former I'd venture to guess we may find out who he signs with a few days before the deadline.

Supposedly they did all the medical stuff in LA already when Tanaka was here (and gave the interested teams a copy), so I wouldn't think they'd need to do that again.

the dodgers have infinity money though

I'm hoping Colletti would rather have David Price, so he'll wait until next offseason to sell ownership on a $150 million starter.

It's going to suck when we finish "second" to the Yankees.

Is this like a defense mechanism? Why is that fun?
