I find it interesting that some of the people who claim to hate college athletics are very much into minor league baseball.

Meh, not really analogous. The minor league players are already playing for the organization you root for, whereas we generally have no idea where the college guys will be going once (if) they're in the pros.

It's analogous in that the level of play is far inferior to the "pro" level, and that a small percent of the players will make it to the big leagues.

There are also far more ways to have a "successful" season in college. In the NFL, being "division champ" is mostly meaningless, but being Big 10 or SEC champ is worth something. So is winning a bowl game. So is winning a rivalry game.

As for fantasy football, I avoid it because I think it would ruin the NFL for me rather than enhance my enjoyment. I'm a Bears fan, so my interest is in Chicago and the NFC North. I don't really care (nor want to care) about every player on every team and who scores X points, etc.

It's not analogous.

If a college team directly somehow served as the Bears pipeline of young talent, I would care about it. I wouldn't care about the games or the scores. I'd care about how the important players did, because that would have a direct impact on the future of the Bears.

I care about the Cubs' minor leagues because that's where their incoming players are. I care about what the important players do. I like watching their highlights. I have no interest in watching a minor league baseball game and I do not care what the outcome of minor league games are.

More people care about Notre Dame basketball than college baseball.

Liking college football but not liking NFL does not make sense to me.

I just don't like it as much as college football.

There are a ton of reasons why I much prefer college football to the nfl. I like the pomp and circumstance Of the college games. The massive amount of passion from the fans makes it more interesting. The regionalism and geography is interesting. I've been to many many different college games and the gameday atmosphere is on a completely different level than any pro game I've ever been to. The crowds are better, the tailgating is better. People care a lot more. College football has all the things that fascinate me about English premier league soccer.

Every week there is usually at least three and sometimes 5-10 very interesting matchups. For instance this week you have a historical rivalry in ND-Mich a very good conference and regional rivalry in USC-Stan an then a matchup of big ten defense and PAC offense in MSU-Oregon. These games in addition to the team I root for. In the nfl I only care about the Bears game.

I also much prefer the college broadcasts. I actually enjoy lee Corso and Chris fowler. I absolutely can't stand any of the nfl pre or post game highlight shows.

As for the level of play, the college game is still played at a high level. I don't really care that the left tackle and d-end matchup is of two less talented players. I actually find the games more fun to watch because of their unpredictable nature.

Also maybe most importantly the games are on Saturday.

the overexposure of the NFL has really wore on me the last 5 yrs or so. I played fantasy football for over 20 yrs, Todd Christenson was the first player taken in my first draft. After awhile the whole thing just got stale and the games are kind of boring. Also I am a Raider fan(I didnt draft Christenson) which has not been that much fun for about 10 yrs now. To me CFB is miles ahead of NFL.

I am not saying anything about anyone here, but I have never understood people who are not understanding that a certain sport is not your thing. Then have to argue why their sport obsession is better than mine or someone else's. It is just subjective taste.

Essentially if you kept everything I like about the nfl got rid of everything I don't like about the NFL, didn't allow Chris Berman or Mike dikta to participate, didn't drastically restrict my ability to watch the games on TV, and did it all on Saturday; thats about what college football is for me.

oh, and of course take away the ability to discern talent from not talent, you forgot about that.

but i agree, college football does have that certain watching-the-kid-with-the-headgear-who-draws-boners-on-everything-at-tight-end-because-his-dad-expects-him-to-even-though-he-hates-football-and-wants-to-listen-to-cannibal-corpse-instead-and-the-jv-coach-hates-his-life-he-would-rather-be-an-assistant-at-some-central-iowa-community-college-because-then-he-can-make-passes-at-the-co-eds type charm. you don't even know how to do this at all and your reasons for liking college football are [expletive] pathetic and you know it

that's not to say it isn't prudent to like college football a little

meh, this is a more appropriate post for a reference like that:

Playing 500 ball when you are a dozen games down and in last place is different than playing in a pennant race. There are 4 teams ahead of the Cubs in their division. The Cubs are 12.5 back. How many really young teams do you see go on runs deep into the playoffs, not a lot. Just look at the nationals. They were favorites to win the WS and laid an egg last season. yes they are better now, but they went through that first.

I fully expect the league to adjust to the pitchers the Cubs have been depending on. Wood may bounce back, but the Cubs still need 2 pitchers and 2 table setters, ~350 OBP guys.

Also Soler will go through growing pains at some point. Who knows who else will struggle, but some players will.

I just don't understand why people think that a team full of sub 26 year olds is going to take the league by storm. Kind of unrealistic.

NFL fans are awful horrible people.

no kidding, but college fans are way worse

NFL fans are more likely to be miserable alcoholics who beat their wives, college football fans are more likely to be unemployed meth addicts who talk of their 8th grade glory.

It's only pathetic when your team sucks as bad as the Illini do.

You're fooling yourself if you don't think half of Soldier Field on any given day would protect Ditka in similar circumstances
