Rickie Fowler is only the third player in history to finish in the top-5 of all four majors in one year. Jack and Tiger both did it twice, however they won a major each of those years.

rickie has had a really, really awesome year and will win many majors if he sticks to what he's been doing. it's a little too easy to say he fell apart there at the end, miffing those two drives and missing what seemed to be a couple of opportunities on the greens. but that save from the fringe on the other fairway was a magnificent shot, if you can call a tight hook that. mcilroy just had everything on his side after the turn, not the least of which was his eagle on 10 that he didn't hit to plan (judging by his initial reaction) and somehow ended up like 7 ft from the hole. hard to beat a guy who is mistaking his way to an eagle. everything after that was a clinic

i think i'm going to save up my pennies to try to get a lesson with butch harmon before he dies. it's a total waste on an awful player like me, but wow, he has to be one of the greatest teachers in golf history. up there with harvey pennick

And I'm not overlooking Smack's humblebrag either. Mmmmm this weekend I went to a fancy car race in the Hamptons. The Porsche team lost by a nose mmmmmm.

It was pretty sweet. My Kia was parked between a Maserati and a Porsche. They did not look happy.

I didn't want to pollute the Bears thread with random trivia, but this pic of Mathew Ryan (goalkeeper of Club Brugge and Australia's national soccer team) made me smile, even if the "Bears" on the ball probably refer to the North Sidney Bears rugby team

not to diminish the miserable level of competition of college athletics, because that point can't be made enough, but generally the HARD CORE fans of any sport are pathetic losers

But college football has more than most.

Yep. I feel this way about college sports in general. I'll watch on occasion if I'm desperate for sports, but I'd be fine if there was never a televised college sporting event ever again.

college football fans are THE WORST, because the level of college athletics is something many of them see as reasonably attainable. Living in Oklahoma, there are a lot of people are here who are hardcore college football/basketball fans, and are relatively laid back about the other sports. I think it's because they can't see themselves as a 30-year-old NFL QB, but they see an 18-year-old fumbling the football and they think "man if just a couple things had gone right for me, I coulda..."

I can't really think of any sporting base that wraps itself in its own glory quite like college football fans though. Entire towns dressed alike, even on non-gamedays. Everything is about the team and they have things like gridiron/letterman/booster dinners and other get togethers where every small town wannabe kingmaker tries to throw his weight around. Just the concept of booster clubs and how they influence decisions related to the teams is crazy.

The only comparison may be Cardinals fans.

College sports has its warts, but I'll take it over the sanitized, 'distraction'-free, "Protect the Shield", monotonous world of pro sports 25 times out of 10. To each their own.

Pro sports actually has people that can play the game at a high level. And they freely admit they're trying to make money, instead of cloaking themselves in the illusion of trying to be educators.

strong buzzword usage.

protect the shield is no different than how any college program or conference treats itself and their TV partners.

If hypocrisy is a deal breaker for you, you probably shouldn't follow sports at all. Colleges lie about being educators, pro owners cry poverty while locking out players and bilking taxpayers out of millions of dollars for stadiums.

Eh...I've become numb to the capitalism aspect of it all. I just don't like the NCAA pretending to be above it.

But more than that, college sports are bad television. The players are slower and badder at sports. In general, that doesn't appeal to me. I'll watch college sports on occasion, but it's nowhere near as enjoyable as watching pros do things that few others on the planet are able to.

i'm failing to see how any of those words are meaningful descriptors of pro sports in ways that don't apply to collegiate athletics

I love college sports, probably more than pro, but not for any concrete reasons. I just do.

And no fans are worse than Boston fans, that's a given.

Nothing wrong with that. Judging by TV ratings, you're more right than I am. Like Derwood said, I have no legitimate explainable reason for liking college more.
