Yeah it's just Law being Law, he probably declared Lake a toolsy player years ago but with no chance of putting them together so he's sticking to it. He's incredibly stubborn on reversing his stances on prospects once he makes a declaration on them.

Kevin (Chicago)

Junior Lake's big start has to open eyes around....OW. How did you do that through the internet?

Klaw (1:17 PM)

Stop asking or I'll do it again.

I was in the bleachers and was so happy/shocked I didn't know what to do... kinda just stood there as my friends celebrated.

Keith Law on ESPN 1000 with Waddle and Silvy right now saying Lake is not a very good player and has awful pitch recognition. He said he followed his career in the minors and he's just not any good.

Hey, [expletive] you, Keith! :hello:

There are days, days of data that prove you wrong.

He might be. And that is probably too harsh. But I have no problem with him saying that if that's what he thinks.

Junior Lake, birthday 3/27/1990

Moved to outfield because couldn't handle infield

279/341/432 at AA last year

295/341/462 at AAA this year

Nearly a full week of MLB awesomeness, fueled by .600 BABIP

Provokes riots if not given proper respect

Josh Vitters, birthday 8/27/1989

Still on the infield, though not great at it

304/356/513 in AAA last year

284/370/469 in AAA this year

Terrible month in MLB last year, fueled by .154 BABIP

Considered by many to be utterly worthless, no longer worth consideration

Law's disgust of Lake reminds me of how mine used to be for Rich Hill.

Oh, I remember that all too well.

Let's just go ahead and ignore the fact that the only OF spot Vitters can play is LF while Lake is in the process of showing he can play anywhere in the OF. Also, I don't get the Vitters hate, but he's certainly not as valuable as Lake if they hit exactly the same.

I haven't given up on Vitters handling 3b, and he's a better hitter than Lake.

You should.

And the edit is debatable because Lake has substantially more projection.

What can I say? Never believed in him. Wish he wouldn't have fallen as far as he did though.

Hard for a 2 pitch ( no one pitch Rich jokes) starter to make it, especially when the FB wasn't overpowering. Never could develop anything else.

Lake already has 2 errors and a couple other adventurous plays in only 6 games. He's measuring as a -38 defender in CF thus far. Not that he would be that bad over an extended sample, but I don't think he's really proving himself to be an option there. That said, his arm likely plays better for RF than Vitters, so he does have that going for him.

In actuality, Vitters and Lake have very similar futures. RH backup OFs that might be able to play a little 3B in a pinch. Whether you want the toolsy one who may also K 30% of the time and flame out or the guy who makes contact with literally everything and may become Willie Bloomquist is more of a personal preference.

I don't mind Keith Law's opinion, it's just how arrogant he went about it on the Waddle and Silvy show. He went out of his way to call Lake awful when that's clearly not the case. He might not be a superstar like he's been playing but he's clearly not awful.

He might be awful. He put up a lower OPS in AAA than several players who have since turned out to be awful.

If you do what he's done in his first six games, you're not awful. He might be below-average when it's all said and done but he's definitely not going to be awful.
