I don't keep up with the minors too much so I was surprised to hear Friday night that Lake had never played CF before. Looking at his stats he played 6 games in RF for Iowa but the rest of his career has been in the IF, with a majority of that time at SS. I have no idea what his glove is like. Where does he project in the major league lineup? RF? CF? LF? 2B? Hopefully he continues to hit well and makes Theo & Jed think before sending him back down when people start coming off the DL.

He likely projects as a guy who plays a lot of positions and doesn't play any one of them exceedingly well but has the athleticism to be passable at a few of them.

IIRC, didn't the FO come out and say that they were attempting to make Junior Lake a super utility guy, ala Ben Zobrist?

I don't remember if they said it explicitly or just through rumors.

I really like him in the Hairston role next year (OF bench bat with emergency potential in the IF). And that saves us a couple of million to put toward other needs.

His best position if he were to play every day is probably RF.

Yep, platoon bench bat seems his best immediate role, especially with DeJesus, Schierholtz, and possibly Sweeney all potentially benefitting from a platoon partner.

Does Lake have noticeable splits with his numbers?

In the upper minors(about 1000 PA, 300 v. LHP) he's actually had a slight reverse platoon split.

If Olt gets to the majors and sticks, Lake seems "stuck" in the OF. I hope he doesn't get put in a pure platoon situation, but he should be able to get plenty of starts either way. Plenty of ABs in a platoon w/ Valbuena at 3B. Same can be said for the OF with DeJesus and/or Schierholtz.

Really don't know what to think of his prospects long term. He's very exciting to watch for now though.

I would like to take a moment to revel in being one of Lake's bigger supporters throughout the minors. I don't know if it will last, so I want to take the opportunity while it is here.

Now if only Vitters could reward my faith, as well.

We can be baseball hipsters; I was into Junior Lake before it was cool.

Too late. You put all your eggs in the Vitters basket and that is all anybody will remember.

What was the stat Len had last night? Junior Lake is the first Cubs player to reach base (or was it get a hit?) in his first 5 games as a Cub since Steve Lake in 1983.

He was ahead of the game on Brett Jackson too.

Pat mentioned that Lake was the first Cub to get 9 hits in his first 4 games since Andy Pafko in 1943.
