I hate to say it, but other than younger IFA's, I don't see us signing any large(3years and up) type contracts until we have seen Javy and KB in the majors.

 

This sis what I'm thinking too. We'll make a futile run at Maeda, wind up with a 1-2 year deal on an OF coming off a disappointing year and probably the same for a SP or 2. I don't think Masterson is happening

 

ETA Markakis, Billingsley, McCarthy?

 

I'm really interested to see what type of market develops for Maeda. Depending on how some older guys pitch this year you could make the argument he barely cracks the Top 10 of available FA pitchers, he'll require a release fee, and doesn't have a huge ceiling like Darvish/Tanaka; but he also won't have pick/pool compensation attached and he'll be by far the youngest option. Seems like the ideal use for that rollover money to me, unless they spend it beforehand to get that Cuban CF or something.

 

The other complicating factor is obviously Shark. What happens with him will have a huge impact on the quantity, quality, and money available for SP they pursue. In general though I agree, they'll want to make 3 real moves(2 SP and 1 OF), and keeping/extending Shark could be one of them.

TT, who is a FA that the Cubs passed or missed on that you wish they had ended up with (besides the obvious IFA's)?

 

Just scanning the list that they could've used and I would've given their contracts to: Ellsbury, Ubaldo, Hughes, Kazmir, Anibal, & D. Murphy, and at the time I would've given the money to Upton, Bourn, and McCarthy and been made to look foolish. I was also pretty happy with the Jackson signing.

i think he's probably still an acceptable cheap starter in LF, but he's simply not been a viable CF, and that's where he'd need to fit in to have a role here long-term

 

he doesn't have much use as a 4th OF if he can't PH, can only field one spot (albeit very, very well) and it's not CF, so i guess we probably just trade him in the next calendar year if a cash-strapped team makes a half-way decent offer

Alcantara could be the use of that spot. Arismendy is here on Hendricks spot and I assume he'll rejoin the club after the ASB.

I'm thinking that's more of a coincidence than the real problem. Lake's played nearly 2/3 of his innings in LF already this season, even making that 100% wouldn't make him all that viable in 2014.

Unless you enjoy watching guys flail helplessly away, there's not much point in keeping Lake in Chicago, either. If he's going to become anything, he's going to need a lot of help, and PA he's not going to get at the big league level.

The same argument for Olt applies to Lake. Seeing as the win games segment of our season is at an end, the faint glimmer of hope that these once high ceiling prospects figure something out is more valuable than the replacement level players who would step in.

 

Both are still young enough that maybe there is hope, but if they are to somehow figure it out, struggling against big league pitching is more valuable than teeing off at AAA.
