One thing I remember Boston fans saying is that Epstein really seems to revel in taking deals to the brink and then pulling the plug. Or, more charitably, he absolutely refuses to cave to the pressure of a nearly done deal.

Well. We'll get a comp pick if we don't trade him and a larger draft pool. We absolutely shouldn't trade Garza if we dont get that value back

I can't imagine Texas is blowing other teams offers out of the water. If the deal was Edwards, Olt, and Ramirez, with one rumor adding Russell on our side and Sardinas on theirs, the value is very solid. Much more than a comp pick. Using our own system as a value guide(not necessarily same exact type players) I'd compare Edwards to Pierce Johnson, Olt to post 2012 Brett Jackson, Ramirez to Alberto Cabrera, and Sardinas to Candelario. I may be in the minority, but if it were that exact 4 for 2 swap, I would have been very happy. Surely another team is fairly close to that value as a return.....

You say that like it's a mark against him. If it's not what he wants, I don't want him to just settle because it's "close".

I said it both ways.

Personally, I find it to be a mark against him, but YMMV.

Wow.

It just hit me after all this time that dextermorgan is named after the character from the TV show and the poster's name is not Dexter Morgan.

you guys know we're trading away the best player, right? i don't understand how this is like roberts or peavy. why would it be bad if other teams are involved?

I told myself that last year regarding a Garza trade. Right before he landed on the DL.

Although I'm irritated that this is going to drag on even longer, at least we don't have to worry about Olt being in the package anymore. This health snafu may end up netting the Cubs a better package.

I'm kinda glad that this took this turn. I didn't really want a Rangers package.

I'm betting the bad medicals were Ramirez, not Olt.

Olt's medicals such a concern he likely won't be involved at all, regardless of additional pieces...

Well, I stand corrected. His eyes are that fucked up or is it something else?

Does Washington even have any prospects left after the past couple offseasons?

They've got AJ Cole, who's a top 100 guy and Giolito, who's coming back from TJS. Outside of that, I'm not a fan.

Any package the Nats would put together would be light on major league ready talent, but there is one guy who fits that description. Taylor Jordan seems to have figured things out. He lost time to TJS in 2011-12 but is back healthy now. He fits the profile that the front office looks for in a pitcher. Throws strikes, good downward plane, a mid-90s sinker that gets up to 96 and produces a lot of groundballs. His GO/AO is consistently 1.6 or better. He's 24 and will be for the rest of the season and has a good pitcher's frame (6'3", 190 lbs). He was dominating AA before being called up to the bigs as an injury fill in. He strikes me as a back of the rotation guy with a chance of becoming more, kinda like Travis Wood.

The headliner, of course, would be either Lucas Giolito or A.J. Cole. Giolito is pitching in games finally, but the only way I see the Nats giving him up is if they're interested in signing Garza to an extension, and the Cubs are sending other players along with him. I can see them having a need for a veteran lefty like James Russell, but after that it would have to be prospects because they don't really have any holes at the major league level.

Obviously, the much more realistic option is A.J. Cole. After that, there are some interesting (not exciting) lefties like Purke, Ray and Solis. Of that group, I think Solis (another TJS comeback candidate) has the highest ceiling but is already 24. Ray, 21, sounds a lot like Kyle Hendricks with a little less control but better at missing bats. They do have two OFers with a chance in 2011 late 1st rounder Brian Goodwin and Michael Taylor.

If the Cubs could get Cole, Jordan and one/two lesser prospects, that might be a worthwhile package. Shooting for the moon and putting together a package for Giolito, Jordan and Solis/Ray would cost the Cubs more in talent, but would also have the excitement factor and upside I'm a sucker for.

I agree after their top two prospects, the Nats system is kind of meh, but with the emergence of Taylor and the inclusion of one of their top two, something could get done with them.

I heard on Boers/Bernstein yesterday that Olt had a concussion at some point that has been contributing to his vision problems like having a hard time picking up the spin on a curve ball. Not sure if the concussion was a known injury or not but was the first time I heard about it.

Don't challenge ABTY...unless you want an angry, aggressive davell on your hands.

The deal was imminent because the media said is was, not because of the circumstances. The media should be pissed at their sources.

That said, I hope the brain trust is not perseverating too much.

Listening to the guys on WGN coming home while ago, and they were saying the Cubs would not get what they want for Garza, that we would all be disappointed with what they get. I wonder why they are on the air with such stuff as that today. They may indeed be right, but why are they saying that now? Said the Cubs set the trade value at about what the Dodgers gave for Zac Grienke last year, and that the Cubs would not get that for Garza. Just made me mad hearing them talk like that. How do you feel about it?
