Driver already signed with the A's. I knew he would but given how he fell, I figured it would go till July 12th. Sounds like teams underestimated his signability.

Baseball America[/url]"]Despite the Cubs’ pitching needs, the organization started the draft with Kris Bryant, the most exciting bat in the class, at No. 2 overall. Chicago then loaded up on arms,  taking seven in the first 10 rounds. Lefty Rob Zastryzny (second round) has feel for his fastball, while college righties Tyler Skulina (fourth), Trey Masek (fifth) and Scott Frazier (sixth) all have power stuff. Frazier, who was a sixth-rounder out of high school, has the most upside but the furthest to go to realize his potential. The Cubs have more intriguing late picks than most led by BA 500 members Trevor Clifton (No. 148), Daniel Poncedeleon (322) and Michael Wagner (192), all righthanders.

Did I see somewhere that Trevor Clifton signed? If so, that's pretty exciting right? Law had in his rundown that he regularly touches 97 and had a strong commitment to Kentucky.

There are strong indications that he did/will based on a few tweets/articles from after the draft. But I don't think anything is official. But yes, he would be a very good sign.

Taken much later than projected, Trevor will be compensated handsomely with a signing bonus in the neighborhood of $570,000, money generally reserved for third round selections and higher.

The draft accelerates on Day 2 with teams given only a minute between selections. To help things go as smooth as possible, clubs ask prospects long before the draft for minimum bonus demands.

The Cliftons set that number at $800,000, a negotiable amount well within market value for someone of Trevor’s draft credentials. Through insistent phone calls Friday, they learned clubs were being told the number was $1 million.

Clifton agonizes as the draft nears the end of Day 1.

Sources had Trevor at the top of a team’s draft board four times Friday. None of the slots, under collective bargaining rules, would have allowed a $1 million bonus to sign.

“It was hard because I knew after the first 10 rounds the slot money was gone,” Dennis said. “It was a whole new ball game.

When the Cubs were made aware of the discrepancy, they acted quickly, offering to take Trevor with their first selection Saturday morning. Word spread, and two additional teams put forth offers by the draft’s 1 p.m. resumption. The Cubs played the ace, offering bonus money in keeping with where Trevor likely would have been selected.

I think that "neighborhood" number is literally "neighborhood". Reference was made to 3rd round dollars, which range from around $750-500. Where in the range Clifton settled, we don't know.

The author in that article made some factual errors. So I'm not sure how reliable some of his details were.

One was that the Cubs took Clifton with their first Saturday pick. They didn't, everybody else had a shot at him before the Cubs selected, but nobody else selected him. Which suggests that the Cubs either had no fear that he'd get taken by somebody else, or else that they'd have been OK if he had been and would have been fine with selecting a different guy in his place.

I'm partly guessing that perhaps it was more at the high-priced end of the 3rd round. That would have left fewer other teams who had the cash space left to beat it, and would have also been closer to the $800K that Clifton's supposedly listed.

Kris Bryant was BA's college player of the year. Here's Aaron Fitt's write-up, with quite a few good quotes from scouts: http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/college-player-of-the-year-kris-bryant/

That was a great read, CR. Thanks for posting that. This was my favorite part from his coach at USD...

It is fun to contemplate Bryant’s future, because as Hill put it, if he’s this good now, “What’s it going to be three years from now, when he really fills that uniform out, when he shaves more than once every two weeks?”

@jimcallisBA: #Cubs sign 9th-rder Charcer Burks for $170k. Texas HS OF, great workout right before the draft, ran 6.5 in 60, held own w/wood. #mlbdraft

$21,100 over slot.

Gray signed. Not sure about the terms

$4.8MM according to Jim Callis. @ $825M+ under slot. He just tweeted that he doesn't think it'll affect Bryant. We'll see.

Hmm, I didn't picture him as a guy that needed to go overslot.

I don't picture any HS pick after the 4th round signing for slot, unless they are really academically incompetent and are totally unqualified for college. Given how much academic assistance is available for even very poor students, not that many guys are in that boat.

Reading this, I'm sort of remembering something, but I'm not sure if I am or my brain just made it up. Didn't DLee take a major step forward when he widened his stance (or was it opening up?)?

It was opening up. Helped him keep from getting beaten on the inside fb, iirc

Zastryzny welcomed Garner, Wilson, and Blair to the Cubs today. Garner and Wilson are in AZ, with Masek and Poncedeleon.

The Astros have agreed to terms with first overall pick Mark Appel, reports CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman. He says that the deal is expected to fall between $6MM and $6.5MM, which would be well below the slot value of $7,790,400.

With the contracts signed by Appel and Gray, Bryant absolutely must be a significant underslot.

With both Appel and Bryant being Boras clients, I wonder if he's getting one locked in to help set the market for the other.
