Kyle Serrano (Tennessee) and Cavan Biggio (Notre Dame) went off the board in the 29th round, Wil Crowe (South Carolina) and Chris Okey (Clemson) in the 30th.

Also, wow:

@conorglassey: #Twins 29th-round #mlbdraft pick Tanner Vavra is blind in one eye. Didn't stop him from raking in Northwoods League last summer.

Clifton has agreed, said he asked for and received 3rd round money. Said he "hates school", so not a hard choice.

Hopefully he doesn't live to regret that statement.

Alamo (BA's #348):

Alamo's durable 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame has plenty of strength, but scouts use words like "rigid" and "stiff" to describe him behind the plate and in the batter's box. His receiving skills have a long way to go to become passable. He has slightly above-average arm strength, but his footwork affects his accuracy, and he takes too long to unload the ball. He is an upright hitter whose grooved swing features an arm bar. He swings and misses too often, and scouts consider him a guess hitter. He does flash promising raw power. A team could take him around the back of the top 10 rounds and try to sign him away from Cal State Fullerton.

Same HS as Josh Vitters.

So the one positive thing they said, aside from that he's got a solid frame, is that he flashes promising raw power? Everything else sounded bad to really bad...

Yeah, he sounds like a guy who could use 3 years in college to improve his game without the pressure of showing results right away professionally. There are a lot of HS guys like that, especially around the rating he got from BA.

raisin... hjow do you feel about this draft for the cubs so far?

I really couldn't separate Appel, Gray and Bryant too much and would have been happy with either of those three. I like the profile of a lot of the pitchers in the first two days. And today, they took some signability guys who have interesting ceilings (obviously just judging from scouting reports); of course they won't sign them all but it's a nice infusion of pitching and catching to the system. Seems like a good draft.

I just makes me wish we had Theo for one draft before the new CBA.

Excellent!

I'm guessing this is where you got the news from:

Knoxville News-Sentinel[/url]"]The 6-foot-5, 185-pound Clifton said he reports to minicamp in Arizona in a week.

“It was a dream come true,” Clifton said about being drafted. “I got the money I wanted, and playing professional is a dream.”

Clifton didn’t disclose his asking price but said he asked for “third-round money.”

“And that’s what I got,” he said.

The Cubs weren’t one of Clifton’s early suitors but did become omnipresent at his starts this spring.

Clifton finished his senior season with a 3-2 record and a 3.35 ERA in 39.2 innings. He struck out 79 batters and walked 21.

Clifton’s biggest assets are his body frame and a right arm that can send a fastball to the plate as quickly as 97 miles per hour — though his fastballs routinely clock in the low-to-mid 90s. He also utilizes a curve and a change-up.

John Garcia

Position: CF

Height: 6'1"

Weight: 190 lbs

B/T: R/R

DOB: 12/11/95

High School: Denbigh HS (VA)

Only thing I can find is a newspaper article:

He wears number 21, just like the most revered player from his homeland. He dreams of making the big leagues, something his father was willing to relocate 1,500 miles to help make happen.

John Garcia, the center fielder at Denbigh and the best-kept secret in the Peninsula District, is closer than he ever imagined at realizing that dream. His coach, Chris Ochsenfeld, said eight professional scouts came to a recent game to evaluate Garcia.

The hope is that Garcia, who is still very raw, might sneak into to mid-to-later rounds of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft. Ochsenfeld says he's in almost daily contact with scouts who are intrigued by this 17-year-old who is half-Puerto Rican, half-Dominican, and hitting .525 with five home runs.

And if he gets the call, either in June or further down the road, the dream will be real.

"For me, that would be a really special moment because my dad, he always wanted me to get there," Garcia said. "If I have this opportunity, I'd like to dedicate it to him. Everything I've done, I know he knows about it and he's happy. He's looking after me from heaven."

Cesar Garcia, who died from cancer seven months ago, wanted this for his son. He saw the potential and believed John would have a better opportunity if the family came to the States. And John's uncle, Ruben Caballero, lived in Newport News.

In September of 2010, they made the move. Speaking very little English at the time, John enrolled at Denbigh as a sophomore. As, literally, a stranger in a strange land.

Been on a plane most of the day, love the Clifton signing. Pretty sure Law mentioned Alamo would be tough to sign. Him or Martinez would be excellent, but I don't expect it. Wagner is a nice pick, figure we get him in. All in all, solid draft. Strategy appeared sound as well.

I can't find much on him as far as scouting reports. There's a news story about an arm injury his freshman year, he didn't pitch his soph season in HS. At one point he committed to Fresno State, who described him as a "Tom Seaver" type prospect, but it doesn't look like he ever went there. He also had an offer from Oregon, but ended up going the CC route.

Pat Casey has won two College Baseball World Series as head coach of the Oregon State Beavers and he’s been talking with some local talent.

Pat Casey – “I think he is the epitome of what it means to be an Oregon State Baseball player. Terrific young man with terrific heart; very very talented; just fits into what we do. Very smart.”

Jake Thompson, a senior at Siuslaw High School made an informal decision earlier this year to commit to the Beavers… he signed a formal Letter of Intent last week. Casey says when he hits the recruiting trail he sees players with a lot of talent but not as much heart… or players with a lot of smarts… but not quite as much talent.

Pat Casey – “And then there’s guys like Jake where you’re going this is the guy. I am a hundred percent confident that this guy fits in our program. Obviously he had to be talented enough to be here and he’s a special athlete. Not only in baseball but in basketball and football also.”

Thompson’s prowess on the mound as a right handed pitcher is what drew Casey and the Beavers’ attention.
