CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs have thus far signed eight players selected in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, including left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny out of the University of Missouri, who was drafted with the 41st overall pick in the second round.

In addition, the list of Cubs signees includes right-handed pitcher Zachary Godley (10th round), catcher Cael Brockmeyer (16th round), shortstop Giuseppe Papaccio (18th round), second baseman Zak Blair (20th round), left fielder Kevin Brown (22nd round), left-handed pitcher Tyler Ihrig (23rd round) and right-handed pitcher Zak Hermans (30th round).

Zastryzny, 21, posted a 3.38 ERA (34 ER/90.2 IP) with three complete games, one shutout and a 2-9 record for Missouri in his junior year this season. He struck out 82 in 90.2 innings compared to just 24 walks, holding opponents to a .266 batting average in his 13 starts. In his 2012 sophomore campaign, he struck out 76 batters compared to just 31 walks while compiling a 5-5 record.

His 228 career strikeouts in three seasons at Missouri rank tied for eighth-most in school history. The 6-foot, 3-inch, 193-pound Zastryzny is a native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and was 17-1 with a 0.20 ERA and 198 strikeouts in his senior season for Calallen High School in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Interesting that the Cubs official list still does not include Skulina and Clifton.

I don't think Clifton will be official until Bryant signs, just to ensure they have enough bonus funds.

Agreed. Bryant is worth about maybe $1.4 in discretionary funds. (Assuming he signs for $5.6, he would be $1.1 under slot plus 5% of his slot would be other $0.3.) If he refused to sign, and the Cubs already had Clifton/Alamo/Skulina/Masek/Frazier/Garner all signed to overslot deals, as I expect will happen eventually, the Cubs would be hopelessly overspent.

Which would be a good situation for Boras. "You've over the limit if we don't sign, so you're paying the penalty. If we do sign, but over the limit, you're paying no more penalty than if we don't sign. So since you're paying the penalty either way, you may as well get the talent....."

Boris won't fool Moose and Squirrel by ignoring the compensation pick they get if Bryant were not to sign.

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today signed their fifth-round selection from the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, right-handed pitcher Trey Masek out of Texas Tech University. The Cubs have now signed nine players from this year’s draft, including three top-10 selections.

Masek, 21, was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention and a Gregg Olson Breakout Player of the Year Semifinalist with the Red Raiders this season, his junior year. He went 5-2 with a 1.82 ERA (16 ER/79.0 IP), three complete games and one shutout in 11 starts. The Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection struck out a team-high 69 hitters and walked 22 while not allowing a home run in 79.0 innings of work. The righthander held the opposition to a .206 batting average (56-for-272) during the campaign.

The 6-foot, 1-inch, 195-pound Masek became one of just five Red Raiders since 1991 to lead the team in wins, ERA, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts. Masek is just the second Texas Tech player in the last 14 years to be named to the Golden Spikes Award list. A native of Austin, Texas, Masek was named the Louisville Slugger Texas High School Player of the Year as a senior at Giddings High School.

that's a significant overslot, isn't it? For the 22 year old freshman?

Slot is roughly 735k. Given the announced bonuses, the Cubs are 242k over slot projections, and they can go over by about 530k without losing a pick.

If Bryant costs over slot I wonder if going over on Hannemann costs us getting Clifton

I have to think the odds of Bryant going over slot are slim at this point. He had one of the best college seasons ever, and the only way he's getting above slot next year is by going #1 overall. Appel and Gray both signing under slot further kills his leverage.

The other unsigned guys are college pitchers who seem to be much more likely underslot than overslot signs as well, from my amateur perspective

That Joeby guy said Bryant was signing at around 5.5 or something, but I think his hit rate has taken a substantial hit since the front office change.

I'm not a believer in that guy at all. His hits have all been educated guesses, after info had come out we were pursuing guys. At any rate, this one's a head scratcher, especially considering his dad insinuated he'd be happy with 700ish or so basically. I guess Bryant is signing well under though, to allow for Clifton and Alamo.

Hannemann is easily the player from the draft I'm second most excited about. Glad to hear he could start playing soon.

Would be awesome if he could do some stuff at Boise and instantly make himself interesting.

Zastryzny tweeted that David Garner signed.

Evidently Frazier and Wilson are confirmed now too, as Mooney and Wittenmeyer both have articles up mentioning Bryant is the last of the top 10 round picks left to sign.

Since both were college players, is it assumed that both Hanneman and Zastryzny go to Boise rather than the AZL Cubs?

Hannemann is a complete wild card. And thinking in advance, will be hell for us in making prospect lists. I see plenty of "age appropriate for level" type arguments coming with him.
