@conorglassey: #Cubs 3rd rdr BYU CF Jacob Hannemann is one of my favorite sleepers in this year's draft. Jacoby Ellsbury comps, which Theo knows all about.

I know people who had to work directly with Chad Curtis when he was with the Rangers. By all accounts he was the most humorless, charmless, self-important douche they had ever run across (and this is an organization that had Will Clark for many years). I think that was his biggest problem, more than his grasp of bible scripture.

"If I stay here, I'd definitely fight for that starting spot in football," he said. "When the draft comes, we'll see what the opportunity is and see where I could be playing baseball for a long time. The possibility of staying here and getting drafted the next year is an option, too. I'll have to pray about it and weigh my options and see what the best thing is for me to do when the time comes."

JACOB HANNEMANN, of, Brigham Young University

On the strength of his impressive athleticism and rapidly-improving four-tool ability, a team may be tempted to take an early run at the 6-foot, 190-pound Hannemann, perhaps as early as the third round. But most clubs are expected to preach caution when it comes to drafting Hannemann as he has little or no track record over an extended stretch at the college level after he chose to go on a two-year Mormon mission in 2010, right after high school. He resumed his career this spring, without even the benefit of fall practice as he utilized that time to resume a promising football career at BYU as a defensive back, though ended up being red-shirted. Hannemann’s raw speed, his best tool, was obvious from the start as he has an easy, powerful stride and is capable of running the 60 in the 6.4-6.5-second range. With instincts that improved almost by the day as the 2013 season progressed, he began to utilize his speed more efficiently, both on the bases and in the outfield, and soon became so impressive defensively with his jumps and routes that he took over in center field for the Cougars after starting out in right field. Along the way, he made numerous highlight-reel catches. With impressive juice in his bat, Hannemann also made significant strides at the plate through the course of the season in his role as a lead-off hitter. Through the first week of May, he was hitting .339-5-25 with a club-high 42 runs scored. Hannemann projects to hit 15-20 home runs a year, if his power continues to evolve. From a tools standpoint, the only area where Hannemann may fall a little short is arm strength, though his advancing age (22 on April 29) may also work against him.

is this an underslotter?

Yes. BA's 214th prospect.

I love the fact we picked a Mormon ten seconds after our religion conversation in this thread. That's fantastic timing.

So he's a freshman and 22 and has football. All sorts of signability issues with him. He's not an 18 year old who can go to school for a few years and vault up the board. And if he's fighting for a spot on the BYU football team at 22, he's not an NFL prospect.

I refuse to believe that Bryant is going to be so expensive that we had to underslot the hell out of the 2nd and 3rd round picks. There has to be an agreed upon big deal later right?

I've got no clue what we're doing. Maybe saving to make a serious run at Jones or Serrano? Maybe Whitson or Sheffield?

BA (214th prospect):

Drafted by the Royals in the 48th round out of high school in 2010, Hannemann headed to Brigham Young to play football and baseball. He went on his two-year Mormon mission in the spring of his freshman year, then showed his natural talent by hitting for the cycle in the team's fall alumni game when he returned. A cornerback for the football team, Hannemann is 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds with loose athleticism. He is a well above-average runner and has some work to do defensively, but he has the tools and instincts to stay in center field, though his arm grades out at the bottom of the scouting scale. A lefthanded hitter, he has a compact swing with natural strength. He needs to work on his pitch recognition, but has performed well considering he was away from the game for two years. Scouts love his makeup and intensity on the field. Already 22, Hannemann is the rare draft-eligible freshman. He's a high-risk, high-reward pick with Jacoby Ellsbury upside.

Also from the link:

He was actually drafted right after he graduated from Lone Peak by the Kansas City Royals, who offered about $125,000 plus money for future college courses (another $125,000; a fairly standard procedure these days) if he would bypass his two-year LDS mission.

The Royals even thought of having Hannemann — who was bound for Arkansas — being allowed to do his church service in the day and playing ball at night for a minor-league outfit that just happened to be in the area.

"We had to explain that missions didn't quite work like that," Howard Hannemann said, laughing.

Howard Hannemann said there's a "number" in mind of what it will take his 22-year-old son to leave Provo. It's in the neighborhood of being selected in the second or third round, which can approach a half-million dollars just to sign on the dotted line.

Possibly and/or Bryant is going to take slot+ to sign.
