So today would be a good day to announce a deal.

of course i'm in full bitter angry cubs fan mode like everyone else, but color me extremely skeptical that this mega fox tv deal is going to go down like it's been rumored.

Yea I'm sadly gonna have to put myself in the extremely skeptical camp as well. Just doesn't make much sense.

I'm still hopeful, as Theo acts fairly confident it's on the way. But it may very well just be him convincing himself something has to go right at some point.

No offense, but it sounds a lot more like you're the one trying to convince himself something has to go right.

It's Loxas, so take it with a HUGE grain of salt. He ended up being way off on that RTO agreement report, but then again, given what has come out about that whole mess, he might've been right about that at one point in time.

#Cubs TV derby nearing finish line? http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-insider/2014/01/cubs-tv-derby-could-be-nearing-finish-line

There are some rumblings out there that the Cubs could be closing in on that long rumored TV deal.

However, like anything Cubs, it's complicated. That's a nicer word than I heard yesterday.

I received indications that Fox Sports is feeling good about their chances of swooping in and taking over the WGN portion of the Cubs TV broadcast rights. The feeling relayed was that an announcement could even be coming soon.

There are a lot of moving parts here, however.

WGN is not completely out of this just yet. There was a deadline of December 31 that was extended. The two longtime partners are still talking. Another source has always painted the picture that WGN would have a much better shot at keeping their TV relationship going with the club rather than a radio deal.

CSN's Patrick Mooney recently reported Fox as the favorites to make this type of deal happen. I had heard the possibility of a Fox earlier as well. Yet, the preexisting deal with Comcast made more sense to some.

Fox is making a huge push again to be a major player in the Sports market with the launch of Fox Sports 1. Having a team like the Cubs would allow Fox a major presence here in Chicago. It may cost them. Some speculate Fox could lose money on this deal until the 2020 season, a sacrifice for a long term view.

Sound familiar?

The plan after WGN is potentially out is for a local Fox affiliate to pick up those games until 2019 (the rest of the games will stay on Comcast Chicago), then all games will migrate to the Fox owned regional sports net (possibly named Cubs Net) in 2020.

We should find out where the Cubs land with both the TV and radio deals no later than opening day, possibly sooner.

Why are they even still talking to WGN? Can they even compete dollar-wise with Fox?

For one, it is hard to negotiate with one entity if you have no other fallback. Second, WGN falls under tribune broadcasting which is a very big entity with all sorts of networks and reason to want to be a part of the sports biz. Although I have no idea if they do actually that interest.

The thought of possibly being freed from accidental exposure to America's Funniest Home Video re-runs is very enticing.

http://www.bleachernation.com/2014/03/10/could-the-cubs-tv-deal-look-more-like-the-dodgers-deal-than-the-phillies/

In a recent video on Forbes.com, a handful of sports/business/TV experts discussed the soon-expiring Cubs’ broadcast rights (WGN after 2014 for about 70 games, CSN after 2019 for the rest of the games). In that discussion, when comparing the anticipated Cubs TV deal to those secured by the Dodgers and Phillies, the head of JP Morgan Private Banking’s sports group, Scott Milleison, said that he thinks the Cubs’ situation actually looks more like the Dodgers’ than the Phillies’, thanks to the larger market and the better overall brand. Be still my heart.

The LA television market is considerably larger than the Chicago TV market (5.67 million TV homes versus 3.53 million TV homes, per Forbes), but the Chicago market is nearly 20% larger than the Philadelphia market (2.96 million TV homes). Expecting the Cubs to get more than the Phillies – at least post-2019 – is not unreasonable. Saying that the Cubs are closer to the Dodgers’ situation than the Phillies’? I don’t know if I agree, but, hey, this guy is the expert. Even splitting the baby between the Phillies’ approximately $100 million annual deal (plus equity stake) and the Dodgers’ approximately $300 million annual deal, you come up with $200 million. That’s nearly a $130 million increase in revenue over what the Cubs are getting today. Think about that. Be still your heart.

Something to keep in mind when considering these comments: it sounds to me like these gentleman are not speaking from a perspective of specific inside knowledge about the Cubs’ TV deal plans/negotiations/etc. That is not to say that their thoughts are not worth discussing, but you don’t want to take the “like the Dodgers” comment too far. But they do understand the market, and their thoughts in that regard are worthwhile (and exciting).

Yeah, unfortunately, I'm expecting the bottom to drop out of these TV rights deals at some point when cable companies just tell the teams to go ahead and sell the subscriptions themselves like the WWE is doing with their channel.
