people realize that Time Warner way overspent on the Dodger games rights and now can't find any provider willing to pay enough money for them to even make money on the deal, right? And now like 30% of LA can watch the games on TV. Maybe that's why no one wants a piece of the Cubs broadcast rights at what the Cubs are asking?

Yes, that's what people are bemoaning.

it really kind of seems that people think Kenney is under some sort of pressure to get a deal done because the dodgers killed time warner.

is that thing about wgn claiming to lose 200k a broadcast stuff we've heard before? how can that possibly be the case?

Nobody's watching, at all?

These idiots just don't understand how fun this is.

I thought it was 200k a year they were losing on WGN America and 200K a game locally?

Last night's game nearly doubled the average rating for the season: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/smackblog/chi-cubs-tv-ratings-20140904-story.html

Not bad since last night's game wasn't overly note-worthy, and Rizzo and Castro were known to be out too. Can't hurt the negotiations for 2015+ partial rights.

I hoped that would be the case. Could that in any way influence staying with WGN? Or is it a done deal already? A lot of fringe fans around the country like myself will be cut out... just when the team is getting very watchable.

WGN America is on record stating they're done with Chicago sports, which makes perfect sense since live sports is the only reason anyone still has cable or satellite.

That basicly just counts people who are watching CSN? or does it somehow include people with mlb subscription packages? I can't imagine many people outside the Chicago area can get CSN right? I know I can't. Seems like WGN games would be a better indicator of what a large nationally availible network could expect for ratings.

The entire cable deal is confusing to me honestly. They are basiclly just looking to sell to a network that's only going to be targeting the Chicago area or is it going to be something that's availible nationally? The Cubs have a huge fan base that's much larger than the area in which CSN is availible. Who else is out there that covers such a large area that would carry The Cubs? I wish there were some names being floated. I don't mind paying for the package but if the entire season or most games were picked up by a network availible nationally I'd be all over watching it that way.

You aren't getting a large nationally available network to bid on the Cubs, unless you account the national availability of regional sports networks via Extra Innings. The money is going to be based on the revenue such a network would expect to draw in Chicago.

Well that sucks. One of the that I hate about extra innings is that it's on a delay and I'm getting updates on myphone before I see them on the screen. Seems like a national network would see the Cubs as a huge opportunity, but then again I don't really know squat about the business of national cable broadcast tv.

If you are watching the games why don't you just not stare at your phone at the same time?

Right, I could just pretend it's live.

Never thought of that...

I live in Central Indiana and I get CSN Chicago.

I think if anyone is signed up to a complete sports package on their cable/satellite deal they get all the regional sports channels, do they not? I vaguely recall having all the regional channels on my DirecTV when I had it, but I could be fuzzy on that.

Those will be blacked out for the games themselves.

Yes, but as TT said, they black out the game unless you subscribe. They used to force you to a separate EI channel, but with the EI sub you can just keep it on the same channel (665, or 666 for CSN+).

Ahh, makes sense to try and make you get the EI package. For me MLB.tv would be perfect if not for the insane blackout regions and rules. I hate getting blacked out of a game in Mobile, Alabama because Miami, which is 12 hours away and we don't get any of their channels, is playing in Chicago.

national networks broadcast games of the week or random games they decide to feature and stuff like that. you're not gonna get TNT broadcasting every cubs game nationwide or something.

Tried, couldn't figure it out quick enough to care about the game I was trying to watch (plus someone linked me to another stream). Signed up for a proxy server, I'll have to look into it in the future
