That's at least a more balanced look at things than Walter :).

Looking at the difference between Bushrod's grade for 2011 vs. 2012, I've got to believe at least some of that had to do with just the overall situation with the Saints last year. That whole season for them was in the tank before it even began, and everyone knew it. There was no way they were going to overcome it, and that's got to translate down to individual performances somewhere. Bushrod graded very well in 2011, the last season where the Saints offense & scheme was intact.

Not saying Bushrod is going to be incredible, but definitely some of the bashing comments out there have been ridiculous and over the top. Everyone knew the Bears needed to acquire a tackle who can play the left side. That was a complete and total given. We had 2 FA choices, and one of them was demanding a heck of a lot more money and has serious injury concerns. It was clear that the draft was not going to yield more than a development prospect @ LT, because the best candidates are all going to be gone.

I don't see what other option the Bears should have taken that was so much better than this. Emery signed the player who has familiarity with the new coach, has shown skills at the position in the past -- and he did so without destroying the Bears ability to make another needed move.

Saints reporter Mike Triplett was on Waddle and Silvy earlier, and he loved the move for the Bears. Said Bushrod didn't get tons of help (though he did sometimes), and that Brees threw a ton. Don't remember all of what he said now, but he definitely was positive on the signing.

Is the collective poo-pooing (to borrow a phrase) of Bushrod based on anything besides the one stat from Pro Football Focus?

My problem with the poopooing is that I don't think the stats are able to show how much help Webb would receive or how many drop backs Bree's would have to allow Bushrod to single block.

The Saints passed more then the Bears last season and in previous seasons.

@vxmcclure23: Bears expected to release Matt Toeaina, accoding to league source. Bears asked Toeaina to take paycut.

I don't think that saves us much. Looks like he wasn't making much to begin with.

EDIT: $1.125mil saved.

@ESPNChiBears

One #Bears UFA on the club's lack of communication with their own free agents, "They want their own guys." Such is life in the NFL.

@ESPNChiBears

Still believe the #Bears will try and re-sign some of their UFAs but at a discounted rate.

I am not sure whether the tone of that comment was "matter of fact", but if it was a complaint that guy should quit whining and try to understand what it means to be a professional in a highly competitive industry.

Matt Spaeth released per Jeff Dickerson.

So how much have we saved in total?

Spaeth is around $2mil (not positive on that one), Toeana around $1mil, and Davis like $1.5.

Buys us a backup or two.

EDIT: We should cut Garza too.

I'd be pretty happy to get rid of all the TE's from last year, except for Rodriguez, since we don't really know what we have with him.

Happy to see Kellen Davis and Spaeth GONE!

"I'm kind of bigger than I was. I'm more muscular than I was in the past. I actually started lifting weights really, really hard. But I'm in the best shape I've ever been. Ask any of the guys in the camp, I'm stronger than I've ever been, I'm faster than I've ever been. I could run all day. I'm kind of like a black unicorn out there. It's amazing to watch. You go out there and you see a big, black guy running down the field, it's usually me. So I'm pretty good out there. It's been great so far."

His whole PC was amazing.

Ian Rappoport says the Bears are one of a number of teams interested in Captain Munnerlyn.

Obviously he's no Winfield but the would be a nice option for nickel.
