So Kyle Long played 33 snaps last night. Got a +5.7 grade! That's ridiculous for a guard.

BUT BUT BUT IT WAS ALL MILLS

our backup QBs are a bunch of talentless animals.

Handedness is actually much more important at OT than it is on the interior. The main reason is the kickstep. Its not very natural for a left handed/footed player to kick step with his right and maintain a strong base. Righty leading with the left isn't as uncommon. That being said, can overcome the issue with reps, but would take some getting used to.

I assume this is only for training camp purposes.

Blanchard broke a bone in his hand. Definitely a guy to throw into preseason games late so the top 2 guys don't get hurt.

This I can actually somewhat agree with. So handedness would mostly be a concern for a guy switching sides with little to no experience on the other side. A guy who's already established on one side? It would be worse to move him even if his handedness says he would have an easier time on the other side. It's all about reps and teaching your body. Anyone who's been board enough to try writing with your opposite hand or throwing a ball knows you can make some pretty significant ambidextrous gains with pretty minimal effort. And a kick step takes way less precision than writing or throwing. So if you had a training camp and 4 preseason games to teach your body, that should allow you to switch sides so long as you have the athleticism and skill set required.

Long is basically already a fresh slate who has to learn everything new, with the athleticism to pick up things more quickly.

Just watched the game on tape delay. Very excited about Bostic, even this early. Long too.

With SD just handing us the ball over & over, it was unfortunately tough to see the starting offense in full form, but other than the Cutler INT I liked most of what I was seeing.

But let's be honest - this is all about Jay.

Fair or not, this is true.

I follow a lot of the sports radio guys on twitter, and it's funny. Bernstein last night was laughing at the overreactions to a preseason game last night, but then goes on to criticize Cutler for the one int, despite a 98.3 rating. Mully has already called Cutler "Jeff George" this morning on the radio.

I know I'm a Cutler apologist, and he wasn't perfect last night, but for a guy in his umpteenth offense, I was happy with what I saw last night. He needs to obviously find some other guys besides Marshall to throw too, but it's hard to know if that's on Cutler, or if it's on the WR's for not getting seperation. I'm thinking it's probably time to put more of that on Cutler at this point...but still hard to tell.

The pick was frustrating, and that was all on Jay..no doubt. But he's gonna throw his share of picks. As long as they're in areas of the field that don't hurt too much, I think we just have to accept that.

Agreed, he's going to throw his share. What concerns me is the "quality" of his picks. If Jay is throwing deep down the sideline to Jeffrey and its under-thrown or the kid gets out-worked by a corner, I can live with that. What I can't live with is throwing into double coverage on a seam or crossing route.

There may be something to the argument that the ther guys aren't getting enough separation. I'll watch that more closely this week.

Well if you can't live with it you best get your affairs in order.

QBs throw INTs that appear to be "forced". It happens. It is going to happen with Cutler. The Bears can still win Super Bowls with Cutler throwing forced INTs.

Not if it happens too frequently.

Again, I'm not saying he can't throw INT's. I'm saying he needs to consistently make better decisions the one that led to this particular pick, and if he has to force passes to Marshall because no one else can gain separation, we aren't likely to win a SB.

He could throw one a game and it wouldn't mean much. It was one freaking INT in one of his first series playing in this system. Why are people talking about this thing?

I feel like there's a segment of the Bears fan base, and the media, that wants the Bears to go in a different direction at QB after this season, with Cutler being a free agent. And thus, the more we poke, and critique his every mistake, the more apt to convince others (and the Bears!) that we need to go a different way. Of course, the fact that we have a dozen or so RFA's after this season, and that we have no better options than Jay lined up to take over at the QB position more or less tells me that it's not a matter of "if" Cutler comes back, but for how long and for how much.

Yeah, like the segment that accounts for the majority of it. The same percentage probably also wants them to abandon this pass happy experiment and go back to smash mouth running the football and a QB that knows how to hand off and not screw things up.

If the Bears do poorly enough to be drafting among the top 5 next season, you can probably expect them to go in a different direction at QB. They should be better than that though and they should expect Cutler back.

Has there ever been a more discussed preseason interception? like....ever?

That INT just stands for everything people hate about Cutler. Brings back bad memories. He just seems to refuse to check down or throw the ball away. When you have trouble scoring like the Bears have, you can't be that careless. I don't think the Bears can win the SB if Cutler doesn't improve on that sort of play. We'll see.

But see, people talk about that game like Cutler played badly. He had a 98.3 QB rating. Cutler has always played his worst at the beginning of games. (Career 72.1 QB rating in the first half, 91.9 rating in the second half)

It's probably a stretch to say that it was an improvement, given how little the starters played, and that it was preseason, and it was against an awful Chargers team, but it certainly wasn't some disaster.

Catching up on Friday's game, Long looked dominant and Mills held his own, doing a lot better than I expected given his reviews at camp thus far. Admittedly, the Chargers defensive line looks like it'll be pathetic, but it's progress.
