I feel like there's a segment of the Bears fan base, and the media, that wants the Bears to go in a different direction at QB after this season,

Yeah, like the segment that accounts for the majority of it. The same percentage probably also wants them to abandon this pass happy experiment and go back to smash mouth running the football and a QB that knows how to hand off and not screw things up.

If the Bears do poorly enough to be drafting among the top 5 next season, you can probably expect them to go in a different direction at QB. They should be better than that though and they should expect Cutler back.

Only teams in the quarterback wilderness or horribly miscoached finish bottom 5, usually. The top 10 draft spots are a veritable who's who of the QB-poor. The Bears aren't in that wilderness and it will remain to be seen if they are miscoached enough to finish in the bottom half of the league with the talent that they have.

I'm generally bullish on the Bears' chances at the beginning of every season, but I honestly feel that they have a real chance of winning the North and playing deep into the playoffs, gaining Jay a huge deal and assuring he'll be here for the rest of his career.

Jay has all the physical skills in the world. My only question is will he progress. Has Jay improved at all in Chicago? If he can't with Trestman this year, I would be wary that Jay is a SB caliber QB.

This isn't baseball, where individuals have individualized progress that they control. Jay hasn't taken a huge noticeable step forward with the Bears, but he's been sabotaged by his own mess of a team. If you are going to judge the guy based on only if he takes a noticeable step forward under Trestman in year one under this system (the billionth "year one under this system" Cutler has dealt with) then you aren't getting a clear answer.

How many OC's has Jay had since being drafted? Now compare that # to the consistency that players like Manning(x2), Brady, etc. have had. It's night and day

He doesn't need to progress, if he's protected like he was in Denver, then the Bears will win a lot of games.

The only thing he truly needs to work on is pulling the ball down when the throw isn't there, that's not a developmental leap. even if he doesn't do it, it's not a huge hindrance if he can make his reads on the other plays.

Is Cutler a SB winning QB if he doesn't progress and gets protected like he did in Denver? No. He has to get better. Get smarter.

Unless they win the Super Bowl without him getting any smarter. Then he would just be a Super Bowl winning participant QB.

Trade Cutler for two first rounders and a second to Jacksonville. Start Edwards, tank the season. Get two top 5 picks.

I just saw this at the top of the page and assumed that Marshall, Briggs or Peppers had a major injury or something. Phew.

Just about any QB can be a SB winning QB.

That won't ever happen. Who lauds Cutler for his in-game decision making? It's his weakness. It has to get better. He's a franchise QB bc of his arm strength and escapability. Nothing else.

Yes. Dilfer did. But on this team, Cutler has to be Pro Bowl level.

Interesting, considering the defense on this team was the best in the NFL last year. Didn't realize losing gimpy Brian Urlacher made this a team that had to rely completely on its offense/QB to get anywhere.

Third in points. But the Bears were going nowhere in the playoffs if they had made it even with a better line if Cutler is not significantly better. The player who plays the single most important position in all of team sports has to be great unless you are on the 1985 Bears or 2000 Ravens. This Bears defense is good, but not that good.
