and of course belichick is too cool to be seen with any of those animals.

Belichick probably isn't in it because he isn't part of the NFL Coaches Association. I don't know if Payton isn't a member either or not, but I know Belichick isn't for sure. That's why it always says "NE Coach" in the Madden video games instead of Belichick's name.

PHOENIX — Perhaps they should rename them the Chicago Vultures.

Somewhere along the way, the Bears have become scavengers, sustaining themselves on what other teams have left behind.

If you had to project the Bears' 2013 starting lineup in March, you would say near 40 percent of it is likely to be made up of players other teams brought into the league (that's assuming the Bears will acquire either a veteran guard and/or a veteran linebacker who will start).

And it's not like the players the Bears acquired from other teams are complementary players — many are of the core variety.

The four Bears who will be paid the most in 2013 all are imports — Julius Peppers, Jermon Bushrod, Brandon Marshall and Jay Cutler.

The Bears drafted only four of their top dozen highest-paid players.

This did not happen by design. And the Bears do not aspire to be free-agent driven.

For when you have to remember why Angelo had to go. But also, after year 1 Emery has not exactly shown that he's capable of doing the opposite. Also this should be something that shuts up all the people who claim the Bears aren't good enough because ownership is cheap.

This is an important draft for Emery, IMO.

Trestman having breakfast with media this morning:

-Sounds like Hester will be strictly a returner. Will spend most of his time working with Joe DeCammillis.

-Jeffrey will probably start

-Cutler will work on his mechanics. Read option will be in the Bears package.

-Urlacher can still help on the field. Ted and Phil actively working to resolve the issue. "We thought without question that he can play on 1st & 2nd down for us." Sounds like it's strictly a matter of money.

Read option? I don't think that's a good idea with Cutler at QB.

Says they're looking at it, that everybody is looking at it right now.

-Martellus is a 3 down player. Prideful blocker, smart guy. Ascending 26yo TE with the upsides to do it all.

-Playbook not quite done yet. Won't give it to the players till it's "clean".

-Little communication with Cutler so far. Just brief non-football conversation. Praising him left and right though...can make all the throws, inventory of passes....etc.

They better not run read option for Cutler. While he's athletic and mobile, he should never run by design.

Maybe they'll draft/sign a mobile backup QB?

Definitely. I think if its similar to last years draft we're in trouble for a few years.

I wouldn't want the read option to be a staple but Cutler should absolutely run by design on occasion.

Yeah. Being in the package isn't the same as being a staple of the offense. Get it on video for other teams to have to prepare for.

Heard a Trestman interview on the Score today. Doesn't seem to be particularly excited about Urlacher returning. Said he could still be a useful player for the bears "on first and second down". Also said Hester is a full time return man and will be practicing very little with the WRs this year

Free agent DE Turk McBride to visit Bears on Tuesday.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/01/01/free-agent-edge-defenders/

Bears sign him to a one year deal.

Bye Izzy. And McBride is not that good.

McBride as backup, Mcclellan starter?

Sadly I doubt Shea can be much of a starter in the NFL. Unless he develops a lot of strength and bulk, he's basically a speed rusher limited to passing downs and a 3rd DE role on the roster, which is why I have and will still criticize him being chosen in the first round.
