Emery said McClellin is going to play MLB. At least I wouldn't be surprised.

What??

Since he's not very good at being a defensive end, might as well get something out of this draft pick.

You stated it as a fact that Emery said that. It was just missing the BREAKING NEWS alert in front of it.

Why not move him to corner?

Because that would be dumb since he couldn't physically handle the position.

Did you miss the part where I said "at least I wouldn't be surprised"? That means I wasn't stating a fact.

That was the confusing part, because the first sentence read as a fact. My reading wasn't the issue.

Urlacher says the offer was a slap in the face. Love you Brian, but grow up. Its a business.

That's where I come down on this. Just leave gracefully. Does he really have to play the victim?

Brian Urlacher, Ed Reed, Wes Welker, and Steven Jackson will all be playing for new teams next year.

Wes Welker seems pretty out of place on that list.

This was the right move. He's not worth 5 million anymore. I understand that is very hard for him to accept. He'll get over it (or he should). This happens to the best of em'. Even Ed Reed - who is probably only slightly less important to the identity of his now former franchise - is leaving his team with something in the tank. I will miss Urlacher, but its time to move fwd.

I could see him winding up in Buffalo, Dallas, or even Denver.

EDIT: the Raiders have to be absolutely drooling at the thought of signing him.

Also prob means we are drafting one of the three 1st/2nd Rnd LB's. I like the kid from K State, personally.

Hes got the buzz right now.

Wow so it's over. Good bye Urlacher. Lots of good memories.

80% of Bears fans are going to have to buy a new jersey at least until he retires and its fashionable to wear Urlacher again

From what I've read he's crazy athletic and has a mean streak. Could make the Urlacher pill go down a lot easier.

EDIT: Dude just enjoys hitting people:

Yeah, he's my favorite LB prospect in the draft too. Ogletree is interesting but I'm scared off by his off field issues.

I'm sad but not surprised and I do think the Bears were jerking everyone around when saying they wanted him back.

This is from Mully's column at the Trib website. Kinda depressing.

Now the Bears effectively stand naked at linebacker with Lance Briggs and little else. Can they draft their way out of it? Not if they don't get more draft picks. And with respect to Emery's reputation as a draft guru, the Bears have effectively the same scouts in place who failed repeatedly to produce a linebacker through the draft in the Jerry Angelo era, during which the team flailed miserably 10 times at the position.

Brad Jones and Karlos Dansby are still out there in FA for MLB. I'd take either over Urlacher, at this time of his career. If we prefer filling OLB, Daryl Smith, Nick Burnett, Thomas Howard, Justin Durant, DJ Williams, and Leroy Hill are all still available. I feel pretty confident that we can add one ghy from one of these 2 groups, and spend a 1st or 2nd round pick on the other and be as good or better off than we were in 2012, between the 2 spots.

Other than Trestman's odd comments to Laurence Holmes today, did they really say they wanted him back?

They said they wanted him to retire a Bear...

The Bears hired 8 scouts last year, and promoted others to new positions. Sure, he can say they still have many of the same scouts, but they also have a lot of new voices, and it was a significant change to the organization last year. I disagree it is "effectively the same scouts in place" as they have had all along.

Some of those guys will command more than the $2M we were offering Lach. From that list Brad Jones is the most interesting, but probably too expensive, even if we cleared some cap. The best option given our cap figure I think would be Durant. Lions don't seem to be interested in bringing him back and doesn't look like he has much interest. FWIW, PFF had him rated at -.1 last year. Urlacher was -11, Roach wad -2.5. Jones was +9 and has both inside and outside experience.

The way I see it:

It's very sad to see Urlacher go, especially when it wasn't on his own terms. I think he had a lot to prove and he would have been as healthy as he has been in 2 years had he suited up for the Bears this year. Ray Lewis had a very similar situation with the Ravens and it looked like he had lost a step and was headed out of the league. He came back and gave the Ravens 3-4 more seasons. Not at the same level as before, but still above average on the field and played a huge leadership/inspirational role. I feel bad for guys like Briggs and Tillman who have never played on an NFL team without Urlacher. But they'll get over it. Just like they got over Alex Brown. Just like they'll get over Lovie.

That being said, this move probably won't sit well with most of the fanbase. It won't sit well with most of the defensive players. But it's 100% the right football move. The Bears need to change their identity as a franchise. The Monsters of the Midway stuff is over. The Bears need to change the culture from a defense first team to a team with an offense that needs to be feared. As long as Urlacher was here, it was going to be hard to change the team's identity. Losing Urlacher allows the Bears to take a big step in putting a younger defense on the field. The Bears started last season with 5 starters over 30. 2 of them will now be gone if Idonije doesn't come back. Even if he does, he won't start. And potentially 2 more will be gone next season with Peppers' contract and Tillman being a FA.

This also puts extra pressure on Emery to not miss early in the draft for a while. The offense is pretty young. And if you can build a solid young defense around guys like Melton, McClellin and whoever you draft at LB this year, the team won't have to sign big contract FAs to put themselves in this type of salary cap bind.

I don't buy this theory of "changing identity" at all. Brian Urlacher has nothing to do with the quality of the offense. His presence wouldn't have prevented them from getting better and his absence won't facilitate that improvement.

It is the same scouts that did so poorly in last year's draft.
