Someone who runs an MLB organizations really said this, in 2013.... Regarding trading Bauer/Upton

neither player fit the club's preference for "the dirt-on-the-uniform, all-out, get-concussed-or-go-home sort of player."

Who said that?

That reads like somebody else's interpretation of what was said and not a direct quote. "Get-concussed"?

It was on MLBTR, I assume it was Towers, Gibson, or someone else in the organization.

They are not quoting Towers, they are quoting a writer, Jeff Passan.

As much as any baseball team in recent memory, the Diamondbacks on Thursday publicly embraced the idea of grittiness and guts, of the inherent and unquantifiable. And in doing so, they finished a two-trade whammy over the last six weeks that has seen them ship out their two most talented players in an effort to better embody this belief.

First went Trevor Bauer, the super-talented and cerebral pitching prospect who rubbed manager Kirk Gibson and some teammates the wrong way. And now Upton, the super-talented and underproductive outfielder who was extremely well-liked by teammates but did not embody the dirt-on-the-uniform, all-out, get-concussed-or-go-home sort of player Gibson wants, because, in a flare of vanity, Gibson wants guys who play like he did, football in a baseball uniform.

If Gibson is behind this, he's as bad as Dusty. Not sure which is worse: having a manager destroy all of your young players (along with their trade value) or having a manager that would prefer trading your young players for guys who play "the right way." I think I'd still lean towards Dusty.

The dude we took in the Rule 5, so we don't have to keep him on the main roster all year.

Derp. Rondon. I should've realized this. :banghead:

I just kept thinking about Anthony and wondering if he had some brother I couldn't track down (or just another dude with the same last name).

That could not happen.

Maybe not in the "just hold onto that guy as part of the deal" sense, but I'm not aware of any restrictions that the Cubs can't mostly agree on a deal that involves Rondon, then just return him to the Indians as a formality before they trade him to us outright.

In my defense, it was relatively early when I typed that out.

Per ABTY
Cubs/Indians are in deep on Soriano talks... Sori has already told team Cleveland would be acceptable...

If true, I think its Chisenhall and he fills out 1B/3B bench and starter vs LHP role. Anyone else of "note" they may be after?

If the return is Chisenhall, the Cubs would likely have to include Valbuena because I doubt the Indians want Mark Reynolds playing 3B. He's a butcher at third but played pretty well at 1B last season which is where they signed him to play. And after Chisenhall, they don't have much at third, just Mike Aviles and no one good in AAA.

The Cubs might also want to include a 3rd player in the deal because they need to clear 2 spots on the 40-man and Chisenhall would be placed on the 40-man for sure. We have heard that Lake and Watkins were being discussed in trade talks earlier. Complete speculation, of course, but Soriano, Valbuena, Lake/Watkins/possibly Vitters (or one of many pitchers on the 40-man) and cash for Chisenhall and two younger prospects that wouldn't have to be put on the 40-man.

Of the younger prospects that are trade eligible, I would be interested in C - Alex Monsalve, RHP - Dillon Howard, OF - Anthony Santander, OF - Luigi Rodriguez, SS/3B - Ronny Rodriguez and LHP - Luis Lugo. There are other possibilities as well. Some players from the 2012 draft class could be traded as PTBNL, though that is a little unorthodox given the amount of time the Cubs would have to wait before they could be officially sent over. Davell mentioned that the Indians competitive compensation 2nd round draft pick can't be traded during the off-season, but might be able to be included as some sort of PTBNL.

That said, the rumor could fall through and all of this speculation would have been for naught...

While Soriano had a very nice rebound, let's not forget that he's a 37 year old with bad knees, coming off his first >1.0 WAR season in 3 years. Chisenhall is 25, has several years under team control, plays an in demand position, and has some degree of big league success. Maybe if we were dealing with a win now team, we could twist their arm a bit, but Cleveland is not that. If anything, I'd guess that we end up throwing in a somewhat intriguing player or prospect in addition to the 90some% bath, with them adding a fringe prospect or two.

It doesn't help matters that up until this offseason, they've done everything short of ringing a bell and marching Soriano around town shouting "boy for sale" in hopes of moving him.

Didn't Valbuena come up through the Indians organization? Soriano plus Vitters makes more sense providing the non 40 man guys even out the deal.

I heard Towers on local Arizona sports radio yesterday and he was basically asked if that is why they traded Upton. He didn't explicitly say that was the reason, but it was clear from his answer that it was the reason. He wants the diamondbacks to be a gritty/hustling/hardworking team.

Yeah, he did. Bruce Drennan had a massive rant about him around the time he left the Indians organization.

Enjoy :D

Flipping the bird to MLB roster rules is apparently an exploitable inefficiency. It's simultaneously annoying and admirable.
