ABTY said we had meetings with the Dodgers, Rays, and Braves today. Is hearing we're a powder keg with "almost deals". Says to buckle up for the next couple of days.

He also said they were interested in K-Rod

The way I read his actual post over there, it sounded like he's hearing the entire place (as in winter meetings) is a powder keg of almost deals, not just the Cubs.

Damnit. Re-reading it, you're right. In fact, other than mentioning who we talked to today(also Boras and Close), nothing else as to whether we're in the middle of any deals or not.

Slusser reports that the A's have heavy competition for Brandon McCarthy, as the Diamondbacks, Cubs, Royals, Red Sox, White Sox and Twins have already met with the right-hander, and the Angels and Rangers are expected to join the fray.

McCarthy would consider a one-year deal to prove that he has successfully recovered from his frightening head injury and brain surgery late in the 2012 season.

on Heyman of CBS Sports tweets that the Cubs and Yankees have also checked in on (Yunel) Escobar. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle also recently confirmed that the A's are in ongoing discussions with the Marlins about Escobar.

I'd have to assume McCarthy could land more than one year on a deal, but if he had to go out of his way to mention that then maybe the market on him isn't flush with multi-year deals?

Would Cubs trade Soriano to Atlanta and pay $8 of the $18 million to get him out (assuming Sori accepts trade)? Atlanta reportedly has $10 million to spend on a LF. Maybe get Delgado back.

I would think the Cubs would have to pay more than $8 million to get somebody like Delgado back.

Actually, ABTY is the one that said the Cubs are "pretty far along" on an Escobar trade. As for getting Delgado, he also said the Cubs and Braves would revisit those talks in the offseason. FWIW, Frank Wren is heading to the Dominican to check on Delgado and Teheran after the meetings.

Escobar would be a really nice get. At 1/5 with two more 5M options, he's affordable and not a guy you wouldn't mind giving up an okay player for in return, even though the Marlins might not require that. If you get him now, you're free to trade Barney and slot Escobar at 2B/backup SS, but he can handle 3B too so you aren't forced to deal Barney either. He could also be a part of some sort of platoon arrangement at either position.

And they should. Last year, there were talks of eating 90+% of his contract. Yeah, he had a great 2012, but we're not going to trick anyone into forgetting that he's going to be 37 in about a month with bad knees. I'd eat 90% of his salary for Delgado, Minor, Beachy, or Teharen without thinking twice.

Again, we're paying a big chunk of Soriano's salary regardless of where he plays, and we're not hurting for money. The goal should be the best player/prospect return possible, and that will likely mean eating a large portion of his salary.

no reason to eat his contract at this point unless there is a prospect that we really want. As was said earlier-vet outfielders would not be blocking any of our prospects at this point. just wouldn't make sense to pay him to play for someone else unless we get a guy we know will be part of our near future especially since we would then have to sign another vet to try to replace the player who was most of our offense last year.

He may not be worth that front line free agent money but we would probably actually pay more for a LF if we even pay half of his price tag since we have no one ready. It just doesn't make sense to trade him for a low prospect if we are paying much of his salary.

If Betancourt gets a major league deal from the Cubs, it proves their seriousness. For Carlos Rodon.

Betancourt would be Iowa filler- the vet type signed every year (last year it was Almenzga). It's not a big deal. He offers defensive versatility and MLB experience, something(s) that are usually solid attitubutes to a MiLC roster.

That's what we thought last year about Joe Mather. All it takes is two hot weeks in March and you're stuck with the guy all season.

Then let's hope that's not the case here.

That's good to hear. Wasn't the general consensus that he had great skills but his swing was too long?
