I hope they have that kid on suicide watch. Not sure how many 21 year olds can go from being a nationwide "star/hero" to a nationwide joke overnight.

Holy [expletive]

Late Thursday evening, an independent baseball team, the Florence (Ky.) Freedom, announced it would have "Manti Te'o Girlfriend Bobblehead Day."

As part of the promotion in late May, the first 1,000 fans will get an empty bobblehead box, there will be a pretend kiss cam for fans to kiss their imaginary friends and there will be an imaginary food fight in the kids' area, as well as an air guitar contest.

"

That's [expletive] awesome.

Manti's friend?

Roniah is doing some interview here he confesses to being behind the hoax, that Te'o didn't know...at least at the beginning. Caught something about it on the radio.

I actually don't think Teo lying in interviews after he found out it was a hoax on Dec. 6th is that big of a deal. Obviously he's not going to break such an explosive story in a casual, fluff interview.

Right. Calling a guy that befriended people to hoax them a "friend" is weird. The families knew each other but this guy did this to multiple people.

It still seems really weird that you'd mention it along with your REAL dead relatives. This is what they quoted him as saying after Dec. 6th:

"I don't like cancer at all. I lost both my grandparents and my girlfriend to cancer."

Regardless of whether the GF thing was a hoax, that's a pretty bold stance for Teo to take towards cancer.

Looks bad. But he thought the Dec call was a joke/prank. Sounds like there were several calls in early Dec before he figured out those calls were the truth and all the other stuff was a huge hoax.

He def kept up with the gf thing in Jan when he knew the truth. Had to say what's the best play for him then.

I've said all along he's a good kid. I think this statement solidifies that point. I'm sure he was lonely out on that limb at times.

I mean, how should that answer have been handled? Something like this?

Teo: I lost both my grandparents to cancer.

Reporter: And your girlfriend too right?

Teo: Oh yeah ... her as well.

He's now saying he knew it was a hoax on 12/6, but decided to lie about it for 20 days so as not to be a distraction to the team

this isn't anything new, is it?

but yeah, if he truly didn't know until 12/6 (which i don't think many people believe), i'm not surprised he didn't go public at that time. that's pretty far down on the list of stupid/weird things that he did.

I don't think either of the questions asked in the links below (community service, "shared moment" you'll never forget) needed an answer with a mention of the girlfriend at all.

It depends on what the question was.

A more tactful response would've been "I've lost loved ones to cancer"

i think the possibility that te'o really did get duped is even more enjoyable for me since ND fans have this obnoxious sense of pride about what an esteemed academic institution ND is.

Ahem. OK, here's what we've got: the Rand Corporation, in conjunction with the saucer people, under the supervision of the reverse vampires, created this fake girlfriend in a fiendish plot to eliminate the meal of dinner. We're through the looking glass, here, people...
