Update, 4:19 p.m.: The Honolulu Star-Advertiser, citing a source close to Manti Te'o's family, reported details of the phone conversation Te'o had with the person he believed to be Kekua on Dec. 6. The details just add to the bizarre nature of this developing story: Kekua said she had to fake her own death to avoid drug dealers.

YES. And it's awesome again.

You are sooo double black listed Honolulu paper

This story is the gift that keeps on giving. Times like this I believe in a god and am convinced he's a funny [expletive].

Te'o being interviewed off-camera with his attorney present by ESPN's Jeremy Schaap. Details to be on SportsCenter tonight.

What the hell does he need his lawyer there for? Is there something he should be worried about legally?

Exactly what I thought. Very weird to bring a lawyer to an interview centered around your online relationship.

His attorney is just his hand with a face drawn on it.

I think unfrozen Caveman Lawyer is more likely.

If you're saying that there's a good chance that Te'o himself is actually an unfrozen caveman, I agree.

"Is there a tiny woman inside of this magical box speaking voices into my ear? I DON'T KNOW; your world confuses and frightens me..."

That's the general direction that was headed......

Even if he was duped he is still a liar and a serial embellisher.

None of which is illegal.

Um. True?

Did someone say it was illegal?

No, but reading between the lines, you guys are making it sound like he should be punished.

can you please draw some humor from this you joyless person you?

Also weird that it's not a televised interview and that he waited til the weekend, when news gets buried, to do it.

So suspicious that he doesn't want his public humiliation to be at the top of the news, you're right.

I'm so hoping he ends up drafted by an NFL team I hate so I can make fake

dead girlfriend jokes about him for his whole career.

I would watch every NFL game with Te'o in it if they put a mic on him. Easiest target for trash talk in sports.

If he comes clean about everything, then sure, but if nothing gets told? No. If he's totally innocent, this can be handled tonight.

just like pulling off a bandaid. this douche/gullible idiot/douchey-gullible idiot or whatever he is at this point just needs to get it over with and take his beating. We Americans won't be done with him until he tearfully apologizes to his family and fans and then enters some sort of rehab.

I agree that there are parts of this that are slightly suspicious (no camera, limited audio use). Arranging the interview for a Friday night is just common sense.

I think he WAS very naive. I doubt he was in on it. But I think he embelished it and used it for his personal gain most likely. It'll be interesting to see whether he admits to any wrongdoing or not.

"We Americans"? You're bordering on psychotic.

So Schaap is releasing quotes on ESPN now and Te'o was referring to himself in the third person? wtf? Did I hear that right?
