Also, I kind of wish OSU was eligible this season, just to see the crazy storm that would erupt when they were 7th or 8th in the rankings and undefeated.

They would be ranked higher if they were eligible. They had 3 common opponents as ND and played them about the same as ND. They lack a signature win like Stanford. But I think OSU would most certainly be in the Title Game mix if they were eligible.

In the only poll they're eligible for, they're 4th, and their computer average (if it counted) is 10th. They wouldn't be in the NC game.

How many writers aren't voting for OSU b/c of ineligibility for the postseason? Unless you know that, you don't know where they'd be ranked.

I don't care how terrible the big x has been this year, an undefeated OSU doesn't finish 4th or 5th, behind multiple 1-loss teams, if they're bowl-eligible. If they played in and won the first big x title game, they'd be in the BCS title game.

I was just about to post that. If Ohio State was eligible, I'm certain they'd be ranked second in the human polls (perhaps they'd still be dragged out of the title game by the computers).

Interesting look at whether Alabama and Georgia are the best teams in the SEC, or just the luckiest:

The First Class (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Texas A&M, LSU, and South Carolina) went 30-0 in games against the rest of the conference, with 21 of those wins coming by at least 14 points.

The Upper Middle Class (Vanderbilt) was equally predictable, going 0-3 against the First Class and 5-0 against everyone else.

The Lower Middle Class (MSU, Mississippi and Missouri) went 0-12 against the First Class, with 9 losses coming by at least 19 points. They also went 0-2 against the Upper Middle Class, but finished 8-0 against the Lower Class, with 6 of those wins coming by double digits.

The Bottom Class (Auburn, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas) were 0-26 against the rest of the conference, with 18 of those losses coming by double digits

As a result of how stratified the conference was, it’s hard not to recognize how much the schedule impacts the results. Only two teams in the conference played just two games against First Class teams. It is not a coincidence, in my opinion, that those two teams happen to be the ones that landed in Atlanta.

In the West, Alabama went 1-1 against the First Class, 3-0 against the Lower Middle Class, and 3-0 against the Bottom Class. That’s a really easy schedule for the Crimson Tide — their second-best win this year came against Michigan (or Mississippi or MSU, if you prefer). That’s somewhat laughable for the team that is considered the #2 team in the country. Meanwhile, LSU had four games against the First Class of the SEC, going 2-2 in those games in addition to a 2-0 record against the LMC and a 3-0 mark against the Bottom Class. Texas A&M went 1-2 against the First Class, 3-0 against the LMC, and 2-0 against the BC. Is Alabama the best team in the division, or just lucky that they didn’t face Florida the way LSU and AM did? To put it another way, if Florida wasn’t so good this year, A&M probably finishes 11-1 and wins the division on the tiebreaker.

In the East, Georgia went 1-1 against the First Class, 3-0 against the middle classes and 3-0 against the Bottom Class. Are the Bulldogs in line for a national title game appearance because they’re great, or are they great because they’re in line to play for the title? Georgia’s second-best win this season came against Vanderbilt. Meanwhile, Florida went 3-1 against the First Class, 2-0 against the middle classes and 2-0 against the Bottom Class. Which performance is more impressive?

The computer rankings wouldn't change, though. Florida State was 6th and 5th in the polls but 17th in the computers and was 10th in the BCS. If OSU was 1st or 2nd in both polls but 10th in the computers, they wouldn't be 1st or 2nd in the BCS. Even if you moved them up to sixth or seventh, they'd still probably finish 3rd in the BCS.

And after I selfishly cheered for OU in 91% of their games so far. Don't you know that your happiness was a small, almost entirely insignificant, consideration for me?

Total games won by opponents:

ND: 79

Bama: 70 (69 if you only count fbs schools)

Georgia: 71 (63 if only fbs schools)

hey bud, you're aleady in the championship game. you can shut up now.

The part of my post that got cut off bc I'm an idiot:

Florida: 92

I actually brought it up bc Spurrier was whining about how easy Bama and Georgia's schedules were. USC had like 85 so he's got a point.

I actually cheered for OU in that game. But I'll never turn my back on Charlie Weis. NEVER

Yeah, TT's posts little higher up on this page highlights that.

Georgia's schedule is an incredible joke.

As conferences continue expanding, more and more conference title games are going to feature teams that won the schedule lottery. The B1G is going to have the same thing happen once Maryland and Rutgers join.

How many wins did Ohio State's opponents have this year? They would've hit the lottery all the way to the NC game this year.

edit: 70 but that's high because off the top of my head I know IU and Purdue's win totals include an FCS team each, I'm sure there are others

I think he only discounted games won by the FCS opponents the SEC teams slaughtered, not opponents' opponents

Right. The total less fcs opponents means take away the win total of fcs teams on the schedule in question. Doesn't hurt Bama bc they scheduled maybe the worst football team in the entire country whose sole victory came against a team that doesn't even have an espn page (and may not even have helmets). Hurts Georgia bc the fcs team they played won 8 games.

Lots of opponents' win totals are artificially high. Florida gets credit for FSU and its double digit wins but FSU played a terrible schedule. Not sure how much there is to be gained by continuing to dissect it. Just thought it was interesting the disparity in the SEC.
