that and the brain tumor surgery

oh COME ON

It's a legit concern. I mean, the guy didn't have any spare brain cells to begin with and that probably cost him a few. He sounds like drunken stuttering monkey on air most of the time anyway. They don't come any meatballier than him.

his head/face creep me out for some reason

I called him Conjoined Fetus Left Fielder when he played. The fact that he inexplicably became a solid major leaguer from nowhere at like age 26 made me irrationally annoyed.

The Cards are headed for a fall.

at this point it's a much safer bet to just assume they'll be great forever. one season under .500 since 2000.

World Series hangover

It's rare for a cardinal to have a hangover.

I don't believe that season actually occurred.

i don't want to discredit them as an organization because what they've done since the mid-late 90s is incredible, but can't forget how much of that run is owed to 13th rounder albert pujols becoming one of the greatest hitters of all time. they've obviously been good since and been really good and producing a lot of decent players who together make up a very good team. just saying, for much of that period, when you've got one guy putting up 7-8 wins every year it makes a little more sense for them to have that type of run.

it's kinda like the packers amazingly having favre and rodgers with no real hiccup in between other than favre's rough year or two in like 05-06. it's amazing and it's the main reason why they've always been good for like 20+ years (granted, i'd still bet against it happening again). btw, not saying that last part is comparable to the cards now, as they are kind of the opposite sort of team now (as opposed to having an insanely good player to rely on). not sure if/when they will slide, but losing taveras is obviously a pretty big blow to their future.

the cardinals had/have a great combo of shrewd trades, good coaching, some good GM work as well as playing in a [expletive] division with incredibly stupid teams to help them out.

The Cardinals are a really well run organization. They've cultivated stars(Pujols, Molina, Wainwright, Carpenter) without needing to drop huge money or pick at the top of the draft, they've made shrewd trades and kept a consistent minor league pipeline, and generally know when to get rid of their own guys(an underrated skill).

This season is going to be a bit of a tipping point for them though. 12 months ago they were stocked with high upside talents at various stages of their career, Wainwright, Molina, and Holliday were consistent all-stars, Wacha and Miller were ascending to TOR arms, and Taveras was one of the top prospects in the game for good reason. Now Taveras and Miller are gone, both Molina and Wainwright have injury concerns, and both Holliday and Wainwright may never reach their 2013 heights again. Their farm system is as bad as its been in quite a while, especially in terms of star-level talent. It's not hopeless, there's still lots of good players, and if they retain Heyward or Martinez hits as a SP that should help with transitioning away from Holliday/Wainwright/Molina, but the next couple years are going to be tough to maintain the standard they've set for themselves.

The Cardinals haven't won less than 86 games since 2007, so while they're unlikely to become the Rockies any time soon, they need to have some things go right to avoid a down year or two with the Cubs on the upswing, the Pirates not going anywhere, and the Reds/Brewers refusing to tank entirely.

ESPN The Magazine took a look at analytics’ place in sports in its “Great Analytics Ranking” issue, which attempts to assess how every team in the NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB utilizes advanced metrics.

Out of the 122 ranked teams, the Phillies finished dead last: 122nd

I know ESPN sucks and all that but something that frustrates me beyond belief is something they do all the time and they're doing it right now on their MLB page. There's a headline that says "Lester Ready to Shine?" and the thumbnail is Lester high fiving people at what looks like the convention. And then it plays a video of Jesse Rogers talking about who is gonna play 2nd base. Why even attach that video to that headline?

Do you want me to answer that?

3 of the 5 are former Cubs. I don't see any of them "breaking out."

This guy is an awful human being.

The only thing we know about the breakout candidates of 2015 is that we'll never be able to guess them, not with 1,000 guesses. Baseball is horrible. Baseball is the best.

I do not think I would describe Brett Jackson as toolsy.
