It appears as if Dempster has screwed with our FO. Kind of hard to think they'd agree to a deal with Atlanta, without an indication Dempster would go there. So he decided evidently to force(try anyway) to LA. So, you tell him you'll hit him with the qualifier, then pitch him in middle relief next year. Dick move? Absolutely. But so is telling your boss you're willing to relocate somewhere, then pukl the plug at the last minute. My guess is by doing that to him, it'd cost him 15-20 mill. If he's a complete FA this offseason, I could see him getting a 3/39ish type deal, since prices appear heading upward again. Put him in middle relief, I doubt he'd get more than a one year, prove you can still start contract for the following one.

You can't put him in the bullpen. It serves no purpose and doesn't help the team.

You can tell him that though. Not sure it would do them any good, because Dempster's not stupid and knows the team wouldn't screw themselves by putting him in the pen which only would lead to them not getting full value out of him on the roster or in another potential trade situation next year.

Qualifying offer should be good enough to scare him, if anything would scare him into accepting the Braves trade. He'd be risking future years by basically accepting another 1 year deal where he could suck or get hurt with nothing guaranteed beyond 2013.

Dempster is kept in 2012, he isn't going to the bullpen. We're going to need him just to fill out some semblence of a rotation. Unbelievably we're most likely leaving this trading deadline with no notable pitching prospects, much less MLB ready pitching prospects. Edited by Elrhino

I don't think that's true at all.

I think what he was getting at is it completely [expletive] with his value as a FA after 2013. It obviously doesn't help the team beyond the leverage they might gain right now by threatening to do that (if they chose to do that).

yes, but that's overtly vindictive. It would be a horrible signal to send other players that ultimately serves no purpose. Unless you want to spend the next 10 years trading off guys who have 10/5 rights and just prove how much you'll screw with a guy that exercises them.

If you can't get anything of value in trade, hold onto him and bring him back for one more year and go through this all over again next year. But if he's on the team he's starting. The team is desperate enough for starting pitching.

I'll be disappointed if we don't make some progress towards our FO's plan this deadline. Garza's bad luck though. He's not been good enough to where a team would overpay early on. He's the guy that gets you big deal from a desperate team on deadline day. Guess it's still possible, but I figure something pushes his start back again, keeping us from getting serious offers until the offseason. Dempster? We'll trade him. But it's probably going to be for a lesser package than what we already had worked out. Which sucks, but not the fault of the FO.

The deadline is Tuesday, not today. Lets just take a deep breath, and see what happens before we lose our [expletive], shall we?

Why not? It very well could be.

With Garza's injury and Dempster's sabotaging of his trade value, I think it's pretty likely.

Seeing how Dempster was a Hendry guy, perhaps this is a politics move and making a statement about the new regime. It happens all the time in business

I would have preferred that this simply didn't leak. There are probably cases where this sort of thing happens behind the scenes and no one on the outside is any wiser.

I really, really doubt that. If anything, guys who were "old regime" supporters take the first chance to leave.

I think there's a middle ground between "losing our [expletive]" and being concerned that the possibility of the trading deadline going badly is higher than it seemed to be a few weeks ago.

Probably, but when trades actually get this far put together and it's up to the player, the odds that it stays quiet have to be very very low. Especially when it's deadline time and everybody is looking at the story, and it is a player everybody expects to be traded. It's just not realistic to think you can keep that out of the media.

I am absolutely stunned that gvillecub hasnt had anything to say about this whole scenario.

Say his name 2 more times and he'll appear.

It could be, but it's far from the "most likely" scenario as stated.

It is my belief that this thread has well surpassed reasonable concern.

well that's just silly. It's blown up from time to time but is pretty obviously relatively measured statements of justifiable annoyance.

Flying off the handle about the Cubs prevents us from flying off the handle about important stuff.

Relax, nsbb is providing an important public service.

"Put him in the bullpen" and "bench him" are just a couple of examples that we've seen in this thread. I'm not saying that everyone is flying off the handle, but there's a good amount of overreaction going on.

they were floating potential remaining opportunities for the Cubs to use their leverage to salvage a really bad situation.

Yep. Reasonable speculation on spinning the leverage back into the FO's hands.
