Well that would certainly suck.

Would also make the "balancing out the money" side of things more interesting. Maybe we're taking on something a lot bigger?

Or we could just start from scratch and try and sell them on a Garza/Terehan swap of some sort and then revisit Dempster for Gould.

I wonder who leaked? If said person is the employee of Theo, I'd be scared.

Rosenthal is sharing what he believes is likely to be true, but AFAIK not claiming any inside info to prove it. Merely stating his best guess as to the problem.

I can't imagine Theo would take Uggla, and he's the only guaranteed contract the Braves have next year (McCann and Hudson have small buyouts).

I would take him and spin him to Detroit. If I thought Detroit was interested.

Source points out Dempster deal couldn't happen today anyway. 24-hour moratorium on deal involving 10/5 rights or no-trade provisions.

Wow. This would be a home run of a deal if it happens, and at this juncture, with so much leaked, I imagine it will get done after they finish tidying things up. Yeah, Delgado's had some command issues in the bigs, but it's nothing to get extremely worried about. I think he's got "2" potential.

It's hard to imagine a Garza deal topping this in some respects. Actually, with Delgado in the fold, there's a part of me that wouldn't be as bothered now if we revisited Garza signing an extension. Still seems unlikely, but a rotation of Garza/Shark/Delgado/FA (the return of Dempster in this slot would make this trade awesome ... )/Wood looks pretty solid. Getting Delgado means getting a quality upper level arm, and that could allow TheoJed a lot more flexibility with Garza, either holding the line on demands, gambling more, or keeping him.

Damn fascinating situation, if it gets done. Realistically, Delgado is a better return than ... basically any arm we could've gotten from the Dodgers, outside of Zach Lee.

wouldn't that be the kind of thing you'd talk about before basically agreeing on a trade? hammering out a contract extension isn't exactly a minor thing.

Latest from the AJC, sounds like everyone's basically waiting for Dempster to sign off:

Dempster has trade-veto rights as a 10-and-5 player — a veteran with at least 10 years of major league service including five or more with his current team. As of Monday night, the Braves were believed to be waiting only for Dempster to approve the deal.

“I know what you know — maybe a little bit more; I’m not going to lie to you guys” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said just after 5 p.m. Monday, as his team prepared for batting practice prior to its series opener against the Marlins. “We’re in a holding pattern.”

I think Delgado is a better return than Lee. But I also think the Cubs still clearly need a couple more quality upper level arms. I'd hope they'd sign a FA starting pitcher regardless of the return for Garza, but you don't want to be forced into a position where you HAVE to sign a SP or be forced to start a rotation with Samardzija and Delgado at the top, with Wood and a couple rookies thrown in the mix.

IDK if anyone has mentioned but he tweeted this 55 minutes ago:

50-50, Jon? Get the [expletive] outta town.

The trade could happen, unless it doesn't

So this is all in Dempster's hands now from the latest reports..Would he really be a dick and veto this trade? He comes out and says the whole spiel about wanting them to get a good return for him that helps the club out and that he'd go to a contender. He can friggin sign back here in the off season if he wanted. Now it turns into a huge head scratcher for him acting like this trade is a surprise that caught him off guard when there rumors have been going on for only how long? Yes, I'm probably jumping the gun a bit. Edited by PrimeTime

the trade cannot happen until tomorrow. let's at least give demp the benefit of the doubt for now

Agreed. He's been a good soldier and leader for this club. A number of scenarios could be going on for all we know (maybe Demp is trying to find out how often he can fly back to Chicago ... it is a shock to go from living with family to living out of a suitcase, even if it's only for a few weeks). Add in that the heavy rumors last week were the Dodgers, and let's give him some time. He deserves that much from the fan base.

I hate to be that guy to only read the most recent page, but what is the reason for the moratorium?

It's OK, another secret source clears things up in his article.

"It could happen, or it could blow up,'' another person said.
