The Cubs have started, in earnest, to look at minor league players at the lower levels of almost every farm system. The organization is looking for young pitching in return for its veteran players, but according to a baseball source who has inquired about trading with the Cubs, a well regarded third-base prospect is also very high on their wish list.

what 3b prospect is that?

olt?

I don't think it meas that there's one in particular so much as a well regarded 3rd base prospect in general. Not sure why they don't see Vitters as a well regarded 3rd base prospect by now though.

Exactly, if anything, it could raise the question if they think he's long for 3rd. But they may think his bat could be fine for LF.

They also might just be hedging their bets at a position that has seem pretty crappy production league-wide. If Vitters falters, hey, great, ideally they have someone else to turn to. If both look to be the real deal, hey, great, you've got a valuable asset in a major trade.

Actually, it could easily be Bogaerts or Cecchini. Who knows those guys better?

Doubt most folks consider Bogaerts a 3B yet, even if that is his future position.

The way Levine worded that made me think of Olt first and foremost but Castellanos definitely should be considered.

I think it says they are intent on building a BB-heavy, work-the-count offense, and that Vitters isn't going to fit that despite his improvements in that area.

I think it just says they are hedging their bets. Until recently Vitters wasn't doing anything to impress, but now he has been hitting, showing more patience etc. I think the new regime's philosophy regarding patience has been good for Vitters so far.

I think Vitters' highest value is as trade bait. He's having a good year in the PCL and has the pedagree to fetch someone nice in a blockbuster (i.e., packaged with Garza or Dempster).

2 questions:

1. The FO has just started looking in earnestat minor league players at the lower levels of almost every farm system?

2. What about Baez?

It's really nice to have the ignore feature. I recently set it up and it's made it easier to skip the ignored user's comments. What would be truly amazing, though, would be to have the replies to the ignored user's comments also ignored.

1)They've been scouting pro coverage since the draft concluded, they are one of the most detailed oriented organizations in the game.

2)If they acquire a 3B now and performs well for the next few years and Baez performs well throughout his minor league career, that's a great luxury to have. You don't hold back on making moves for the "what if the stars align correctly" scenario and have too many assets for one spot. I'd love for them to have to 2 uber-prospects at each position and 15 elite starting pitching prospects.

Why does this post sound like the commercial where the girl calls her boyfriend to tell him she is giving him the silent treatment.

I am all for adding any pieces of value at whatever position. I think the more talent the Cubs have the better. It is better than relying on one or two guys to be the future.

Theo went to Barnes and Noble yesterday, bought up the supply of Baseball America Prospect Handbooks, is passing them out at Monday mornings sales meeting and will hold a quiz on Friday.

Baez has played all of 40 games in A ball. Kid's years away.

RT @Buster_ESPN: Cubs are going to push the Dempster talks in next week, partly to clear decks for Garza talks later.

Aside from this, many 3B prospects end up as major league 2B.
