Since we're discussing Smyly...

Tigers placed LHP Drew Smyly on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 7, with an intercostal strain.

Jacob Turner will be recalled to take his place in the starting rotation Tuesday against the Angels. The severity of the injury (or when it occurred) is not yet known. Luis Marte is replacing him on the active roster.

I know nothing about intercostal sprains, sounds like a surfing injury. Where is the intercostal?

I strained my intercostal muscle last year. It was indeed a suffering injury. It's damn near crippling. I could barely move any parts of my body without feeling some of the sharpest pain I've ever felt. I strained it whilst moving a couch into my office, and then I had to sit and do work the rest of the day and then drive home, and believe me, contorting your body to get in and out of a car with an intercostal strain is not easy. Easily some of the most pain I've ever experienced.

Learned something new thanks for the info.

Darwin Barney is an above average major league player with 4.5 years of team control through his prime years. I'd be wary of trading him alone for Jacob Turner.

Don't know that I'd go that far. I mean, I suppose if you REALLY buy into defensive metrics and you also buy that they're not being heavily inflated right now by the shifts. I know there's some significant effect right now, but I'm not sure how much.

We're not talking about Barney being considered a good player based on some sort of bizarre +15 UZR or something. He's always been considered a very good defender with a marginal bat that was very good at everything else(baserunning, intangibles, etc), and that has been borne out over almost 1000 MLB PA's now.

Really though, I think the hesitation is more on Turner than Barney. I like him for his pedigree and age, but the K's are not there and the recent arm troubles and mediocre AAA performance don't inspire me with a lot of confidence in becoming a front of the rotation stalwart.

Yeah, Barney is a great defender with a decent bat, but I'm not buying him as a 3-5 WAR player. I'm taking the defensive metrics with a grain of salt, to be sure.

Turner is back and pitching now and has no injury issues since missing the start of the season, right? Edited by Cubswin11

Turner has supposedly looked very solid his last 3 starts. ABTY, at PSD, said Atlanta has really came in with a good bid. Maybe Minor involved. He cautions not to expect a TON, because of the rental/CBA. Personally, I'm not a fan of Minor and if he's the main piece, I'd hope we get a couple other pieces that at least slot into our top 20-30 range. Hopefully, the Dodgers come out on top here.....

I think Barney's ceiling could be Omar Vizquel. By no means a bad player to have in hand, especially at the price; still, if somebody wants to send us a guy who's ceiling is a front end starter, you take it without thinking twice. Especially when your farm system is full of high ceilign middle infielders and devoid of starting pitching.

What don't you like about Minor?

Just seems very hittable and his control/command has been very iffy at the major league level. I guess he's a possible 3/4 going forward, but it seems like he should be further along at this point, to me anyway. Of course, he's looked great against us.

One of the, if not the, best defensive infielders of our generation? Its funny when I read an asinine post I automatically know who posted it.

No one is offering a front end starter for Barney. He is a guy who will be far more valuable to us for the next 3 to 4 years as a above average 2B than a trade piece. No one is calling Theo and offering a top 3 organizational prospect for Barney, as much as we all like him. Dont forget earlier this year alot of people were asking for him to be replaced.

The Cubs have started, in earnest, to look at minor league players at the lower levels of almost every farm system. The organization is looking for young pitching in return for its veteran players, but according to a baseball source who has inquired about trading with the Cubs, a well regarded third-base prospect is also very high on their wish list.

what 3b prospect is that?
