I think that's a reasonable target, all things considered.

I wonder how willing they would be in parting with Eovaldi since he's contributing to the big league squad.

I'd love to get Zach Lee, if possible.

Well, somebody has to be the odd man out of the rotation if they get Dempster. I guess they could move Eovaldi to the bullpen, but that's not exactly a point of need for them either.

gould and eovaldi for dempster and lahair? where do i sign?

i understand that the dodgers have the great james loney at first and have inexplicably started him for several years in a row, but i'd imagine lahair is an upgrade. although i think loney has pictures of someone.

Heyman reporting the Dodgers are the favorites for Dempster and are also talking about Garza.

They've got some decent arms in their system that I'm sure Jed and Theo are asking about.

I wonder how much Theo is actually involved in that? Is it like a "Co-GM" situation? Or do they just meet about things and then Theo lets Jed actually do the trade haggling? Does Jed have to run a big trade through Theo first? Just curious about the logistics.

Based on an interview I saw/read earlier this season with Jed Hoyer, he stated that they basically split the duties based upon which one has a better relationship with the GM they are dealing with. It also sounded like they try to build a consensus on decisions. I think it is safe to assume that Theo has final say.

So we all agree that Jed will do the initial haggling and then Theo will finalize the deal. Kind of like a car salesman and the boss.

So, no coffee for Jed?

Coffee is for closers.

I doubt that's how it works. Jed and Theo probably set the acceptable range at the start and modify if necessary but the idea of Jed hemming and hawing before going to the boss for approval is ridiculous.

Honestly, if I were the Dodgers, I'd try to keep Eovaldi and send him to AAA. Dempster has already been on the DL twice this season, I'd want to ensure I have insurance down the stretch.

Dodgers want a lefty reliever too, Russell's got to be the best guy available. We really match up great with them.

I'd love Eovaldi but I agree. A team that needs SP probably isn't looking to move a current SP.

If not, he's either going to the pen of AAA. Dodgers already have a strong rotation with Kershaw, Billingsly, Capuano having a great year, and Harang having a decent year. There's also Ted Lilly, who was doing very good until he hit the DL, though I don't know when they expect him back, being on the 60 day.

It could be argued that they really don't need a starting pitcher. They're certainly not as in need of it as some other contenders like the Yankees and Tigers.

The fact that so many teams are interested in Dempster gives me hope that someone will offer something outrageous.

I still have to wonder if so many teams are interested in Dempster because at this point in time, the market is limited to Dempster and Garza. It might not be long before they're joined Greinke, Hamels, Marcum, McCarthy, and Rodriguez, who I'm a bit shocked that he hasn't been involved in any rumors or not. Regardless of who's having the best season at the time, once more guys hit the trading block, it will take away from our leverage.

Dempster is never going to bring in staff ace return, and even when those other guys hit the market there will be a team that will covets a good starter but doesn't want to pay staff ace prices. How many more wins over the course of half a season is Grienke or Hamels going to bring in over Dempster? Pretty negligible when compared to the difference in acquisition cost.

I'm sure Jed wouldn't make a deal without consulting with Theo before finalizing it.

I just don't see teams willing to give up multiple MLB ready players for a 2-3 month rental like Dempster. If its multiple players, it'll be 2 single A guys

Depends on the situation. I can't see the Dodgers giving up too much, since they already have a very solid rotation. Hed basically be gravy for them. Then again, perhaps their plan is to trade prospects for Dempster, and then Harang for offense. Maybe even some sort of 3 team deal.

However, a team like the Yankees or Tigers, who are more in need for pitching could overpay, especially now when the market's limited. However, as I said before, the more options that hit the trading block, the less leverage we have.

There's no way Jed is on the phone with another GM and says "sounds good, let me ask my boss." If that's how it goes, the other GMs would just talk to Theo. Jed knows what's acceptable and what's not or he wouldn't have the job.

Dodgers get

Ryan Dempster

Carlos Quentin

Bryan LaHair

Padres get

Garrett Gould

Junior Lake or a Cubs top 15-20 prospect

James Russell

Dodgers top 20 prospect

Cubs Get

Chase Headley

Dodgers top 20 prospect, ideally pitching

Nobody seems to be getting screwed. Dodgers getting a hell of a lot more for essentially what they were willing to trade for Carlos Lee.

Yes? No?

Yes? No?

You have the Cubs giving up and taking a similar prospect which basically means they're getting Chase Headley for a couple months of Dempster and Russell. Then the Padres are giving away their best two trade chips a reliever and a good, but not great, prospect. I'd say the Padres are getting screwed pretty hard. They'd want more than that just from Headley alone.
