Wow, that was fun!

I always love a perfect game. We've been spoiled lately, though.

At least this was a great pitcher. Not Phil [expletive] Humber.

True, but perfect is perfect no matter who does it.

My heart was racing as if Cain were a Cub. No-hitters/Perfect games are awesome, no matter who is apart of it. As stated before, we've gotten some really good pitching the last few years. Three no-hitters in the last two weeks.

Just saw a highlight of the Blanco catch on SportsCenter. He couldn't have taken a much better route to that ball - very little arc at all. If he's off at all, that ball drops.

It seems like most perfect games have at least one amazing defensive play behind them.

Those are 2011 Verlander numbers, so I'd say so.

Who is first in WAR and is it bWAR or fWAR?

Greinke @ 3.0, info from FanGraphs.

fWAR. Sale is first in bWAR, Verlander and Greinke are first in fWAR.

Yes, I was looking at NL only though.

Greinke's gotta be right up there with him.

But I guess CYA arent awarded on advanced metrics.

Are no hitters and perfect games becoming easier to pitch for whatever reason?

Like I said yesterday, there are 20 perfect games in the 111 year World Series era of the MLB (at least since 1901 when the AL joined), a pace of roughly 1 every 5-6 years.

Here is a breakdown of perfect games by decade:

00's: 2

10's: 0

20's: 1

30's: 0

40's: 0

50's: 1

60's: 3

70's: 0

80's: 3

90's: 4

00's: 2

10's: 4 (on pace for 13 this decade)

So 7 in the first 78 years, and 13 in the next 32 years, with 5 in the last 4 seasons. No hitters are seeing a similar spike this decade. Although the pattern seems to be random, we are on pace for by far the most no hitters in a decade ever.

50's: 18

60's: 33

70's: 21

80's: 13

90's: 31

00's: 15

10's: 14 (on pace for 47 this decade)

So just a 3-4 year fluke that will return to normal soon, or is the post-steroid era producing a more pitcher friendly game leading to more spectacular pitching performances including no hitters and perfect games?

Part of it has to do with how much more often players are striking out. Each of the last five years, a new record has been set for strikeouts per game for the league and it's gone from 6.77 in 2008 to 7.44 this year.

I think the perfect games are a bit of a fluke, but the no-hitters aren't. Obviously more no-hitters increases the chances for a perfect game, but doesn't make it a sure thing. Look at the 70's. There were 31 no-hitters but no perfect games. In the 2000's, however, there were only 15 no-hitters but two perfect games, and in the 20's, there were only 9 no-hitters but one was a perfect game.

I don't know if anyone posted this already but Cain's perfect game last night is tied for 2nd highest game score in MLB history (101) behind Wood's 105.

In 9 innings

Yeah, there was a game back in the 20s where both pitchers pitched 26 inning complete games, and both game scores were in the 140s.

What did Haddix have as his score?

it's probably either him or top prospect turned cardinal ace, lance lynn.

(not really - strasburg, gio gonzalez and greinke have also been really good and should be in the discussion)

Heading into today, Giancarlo is OPSing .581 in June with 18 Ks in 60PA (1 hr). 0-3 with 2 Ks so far today. Though to be fair, lumping those numbers in with what he posted in May is still a great 50-game stretch.
