I have no problem with the trade; I'm just baffled by people who rag on a player like Byrd on the way out the door, doing things like calling him "a bum." Nobody can pretend like he's been anything other than awful this season, but I don't understand the meatballish tendency to trash a player like that.

What did I do now? My sentiment is if they were pushing him out the door for Jackson, that would be one thing but they're not. It's Tony Campana. I'm actually happier with Bowden than with the loogy, but we really shouldn't be picking up the rest of Byrds salary, but I guess it all depends on what the PTBNL is. I'm not expecting anything huge, but even if we end up with another Abner Abreu would be satisfactory at this point.

You also have to consider there might not be a buyer for Byrd later on. You can't always deal a guy away when it's convenient for you, especially when there wasn't much of a market for them to begin with.

First off, I'll say Marlon Byrd was a good Cub and a class act. That said, it's been a struggle recently and at his age, getting a good return was not a possibility. I would like to think by paying most of his contract, we'll get more than a guy Boston was going to DFA. Either way, it opens up an OF spot. First for Campana to start now and for Brett in due time. Plus, an injury now will bring Sappelt up, which is also a plus. Showtome for these guys who may have a future with us and it rids us of someone who didn't.

My guess is a guy like Byrd can almost always be pawned off around the deadline to a contender if you're looking to get next to nothing and paying his entire contract. If nothing else, somebody would take him in that scenario simply to be a bench bat or 25th man.

That said, I'm perfectly fine with this deal. Bowden's about as good a return as we could hope to get barring Byrd playing great the rest of the way to the break. If the PTBNL is a prospect with any upside at all, it becomes that much better. When I thought the return was Thomas/prospect, I thought waiting a little longer might have done some good. I don't think the Bowden/PTBNL deal would be topped by any real margin later on.

True. Again, I'm pretty satisfied with the return. I wasn't too happy with it this morning when we were rumored to get the journeyman loogy and it's certainly better than Lannan. It's already looking better than the Fukudome return.

As a reliever last year, Bowden had a 61:18 K:BB ratio in AAA in 52 innings. He at least has to be better than Shawn Camp. Not really sure what people thought we could get for Byrd, but I'm pretty satisfied getting a young-ish guy who may be able to give the Cubs some good innings the next few years in middle relief.

As far as African Americans go, looks like Sappelt's the only one on the 40 man.

rob was saying he wished we'd held onto him until closer to the deadline; you seem dissatisfied with the trade for reasons that aren't completely clear.

And I stand by it. Bowden was most likely a Cub regardless of the outcome of this trade. I have to imagine the Cubs would have had waiver priority.

So the outcome is really a PTBNL for picking up what looks to be almost the entirety of Byrds contract? Unless the PTBNL is some sort of "last year's draft pick" situation, I have to imagine this is just marginally better than letting Byrd play out the contract. With stakes like that, I'd rather roll the die and hope another team needs a CF closer to the deadline.

I think the whole AL has wavier priority over the Cubs, or is that just the mid-season waiver deadline?

Veal is back in the cub's system? This is the pitcher that was doing well about 6-7 years ago and his brother got shot or something right?

Could have sworn I saw him in the bigs for the Pirates or some other shitty team.

Obviously I don't care enough to google it so feel free to not answer

He's talking about both the Cubs and White Sox ("in Chicago"). Veal and Heath are with the WS.

Hoyer said Cubs have a list of pitchers to choose the PTBNL from and will pick by the middle of May. Oh well, it's not someone drafted last year, because of the date mentioned.

i feel like byrd was like the most boring cub of all-time. not good enough to be exciting, but good enough to not disappoint or suck. relatively insignificant contract, and played on irrelevant teams. he kind of represents that "whatever" feeling i've felt about the cubs the last few years.

Pretty much. Marlon Byrd was a jack of all trades and a master of none. He did everything well but nothing great. After a few years of high profile free agents like Soriano, Fukudome, and Bradley in came Marlon Byrd to minimal fan fair, and he quietly did his job for a few years.

He's still the same average to slightly above-average player he always was.

Is he? And you know this how? Byrd hasn't been the same since he was beaned; and sometimes players fall off a cliff regardless. I'm not saying he won't be good anymore -- I hope he is, I've liked him as a Cub -- but it's entirely possible he's done. He's certainly no lock, at 34, to be the same player he always was (last four WARs: 3.6--3.5--2.5--1.7 . . . ).

I love how you have taken this one word phrase I have used to describe Byrds current play(like Marlon Byrd actively posts here and will read this) and ran with it. Maybe you should offer up an orginal baseball opinion of your own for once instead of contantly going after everyone with your sanctimonious attitude.

He never offers up his own opinion, but instead opts to troll on everyone else and engage in douchebaggery
