Oh thank God! I don't care if we get a bag of baseballs back for Byrd.

People are saying Michael Bowden might be involved FWIW.

We've already covered this. It's a bucket.

Not that Byrd has a cannon, but I'd have to think that Campana's throwing is Juan Pierre-esque.

I think Campana's arm is seen as a little better than that. Average to maybe a little below average, but not so bad that teams are actively looking to take extra bases like Pierre. And that's really all you need in CF, where there tend to be less close plays where a better arm would make much of a difference.

Works for me. I'm just surprised that such a, uh, slight player could pull that off.

Hooray for salary relief they'll do nothing with.

pretty much my thoughts. i really don't care about saving money in the short-term at all, there's no place for it to go.

Did people really believe we would get anything more than a bag of baseballs for Marlon Byrd?

Not the way he'd been playing so far, which is why it makes no sese to trade him now.

We should have waited until a game where he hit a home run so teams would give us awesome prospects for him.

With the 30 some mil that came off the books last year and went mostly untouched I don't know what benefit an additional 5 or so mil could be.

Maybe it makes it more of a lock that we sign Soler? Maybe we have more to give him if perhaps the bidding gets a tad bit higher?

We have more than enough to sign Soler regardelss. In addition to what we freed up last year, theres an additional 35 or so mil (Dempster, Byrd, Pena, Zambrano, Baker, Johnson) coming off after this year.

They better be picking up all of Byrd's salary.

unless they plan on bringing up jackson, then yes, i'd imagine that the sox would have to pick up a majority of his contract, seeing as how the only other alternative is campana. otherwise, there's no reason to trade him.

Campana has already been called up with Demp going to the DL.

yes, i know. but essentially he's replacing byrd, whose production he is unlikely to eclipse.

2011:

Byrd had a 1.7 bWAR and a 2.0 fWAR in 119 games/482 PAs.

Campana had a 1.3 bWAR and a 1.5 fWAR in 95 games/115 PAs.

I think there's a decent chance Campana matches or bests Byrd's production. He's obviously not going to add a ton of WAR over last year with his offense but he'll add a lot of value with his defense (he played less than a third of the innings Byrd did last year) if he's in there for nine innings rather than just a couple.

Isn't Cafardo one of the mouthpieces for the Red Sox? I'm almost positive he's the one who kept claiming that the Cubs were the ones who broke their promises regarding the Theo compensation.

He's also my only twitter follower after I told him his gf looked like a tranny

I think the benefit of an additional 5 or so mil would be...5 or so mil. Maybe they use it towards Soler, or maybe they stockpile it and use it towards a young free agent this off season, or maybe they use it to upgrade their facilities in Latin America. Who knows? Not to do the deal because you have nothing to spend the money on right now is short-sighted.

FWIW, Rosenthal's update made no mention of the LH reliever.

Source: Byrd deal remains probable. Timing issues remain. #Cubs likely to pay most of Byrd's remaining $6.5M. Bowden in play from #RedSox.

Nobody is saying they shouldn't do the deal; the point is that they seemingly already have plenty of money to do all of those things, so any money saved from the final year of Byrd's contract appears to be redundant.

Byrd himself is redundant, and his abysmal start means that even paying his full salary isn't going to make much of a difference in the return, so I'm not sure it matters.

Or "potential free agents are worth very little unless they're awesome in the new CBA".

Byrd himself confirms it

Waiting until after the Boston game could lend credence to Thomas being part of the return.
