@Cubs Cervenka is 0-3 w/ an 8.04 ERA in 9 appearances for Single-A Greenville. He has 24K in 15.2 IP & has held left-handed hitters to a .188 AVG.

What, you mean we didn't get Verlander? [sarcasm]

We weren't going to get much for Byrd's .070/.149/.070/.219 line. We got out of it a relief pitcher and a flyer (as well as a roster spot for Tony Campana who has been doing OK--and certainly better than Byrd). While this wasn't a "steal" of a deal, it was probably about what we should expect.

It's a pretty decent return on Byrd - a usable upper level pen arm, and a low level pen arm (Scott Maine strikes me as a decent comp, the Scott Maine now, not the Scott Maine that was a hyped prep kid). Byrd was terrible when we dealt him - while I don't love Bowden, and don't think I care a ton for Cervenka, the return is definitely fine.

Red Sox designated OF Marlon Byrd for assignment.

The move clears a 40-man roster spot for the return of Daisuke Matsuzaka. Byrd struggled in his 34 games with the Red Sox and is batting just .210/.243/.245 overall this year, but he seems likely to refuse the assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket and attempt to latch on with another team.

Let's pick him up and then trade him for another crappy reliever.

boy talk about a nothing for nothing trade

Hunter Cervenka's been pretty lights out in his brief time (7 games, 13.1 IP). 0.68 ERA, 0.750 WHIP, 5/14 K/BB. Granted he's 22 and in A ball, but they must have seen some degree of potential when they picked him from the PTBNL list.

As for Byrd, now that he's officially been released I'm sure some team will pick him up as a 4th/platoon OF. He's known as a great clubhouse guy which is viewed as having some value, assuming that the team itself is good.

Seems like Byrd might be an ok fit for the Pirates, they've been awful offensively all year (I know Byrd has as well) but he could be a cheap flier to take and see if he can regain some of his success from the last 3 years.
