The Yankees plan is to replace Swisher with...Soler next year? Wtf

That's a couple of guys in the media that clearly don't know the difference between signing Soler and Cespedes.

Soler is a must have. There's tons of money left over, it's the final uncapped international free agency and Soler helps solve the lack of "Impact talent" problem. If they don't end up with Soler then I'm going to be concerned about where this team is going.

One exec’s view of Soler bidding is that Theo won’t allow #Cubs to lose. New restrictions on draft and int’l spending do not apply to Soler.

God, I hope so. Like Tryp said, it's a huge loss if they miss out on him.

FWIW, Kevin Goldstein said on his most recent "Up & In" Baseball Prospectus podcast that Soler is the "prototypical" corner OF prospect and has plus-plus power that grades as "at least a 70" on the 20/80 scale, "if not higher." I know he's also tweeted on many an occasion that Soler would've easily been a top 10 pick in this year's draft were he eligible.

I honestly don't care if we give him as much or more than Cespedes got. We've spent no money at all, will be trading away guys soon and have extremely little money on the books going forward. We're building for the future, not now at all, and this guy represents it. Have to get him. No excuses here.

He said top 5. I can see Correa and Buxton going 1-2 still because of age, but I have a hard time believing Soler would have gotten past 3 in this draft.

On pure talent I 100% agree. I don't think the Mariners would have passed on Soler assuming everything financial remained the same. All the more reason we need to get him. This is a top 3 pick for the highest bidder.

I've seen a lot of fan Tweets with that type of thing. Some similar from Dodger fans too, but not from anyone from the media. If we sign him, I'm sure there will be a lot of fans thinking that they'll see him by September. If he does sign, I just can't wait until the same goofs are once again calling for Theo's head after 20 games because he hasn't instantly turned into Mike Trout.

I don't care if we give him $40 million, get it done. I think this board has been waiting to see how this turns out for months before exploding in anger if we don't get him. Edited by UMFan83

That's really, really high praise. Goldstein is a wannabe scouting nerd, and guys like that are *really* reluctant to give out 80s, or even hint about giving out 80s.

$40 million seems like too much unless we have an incredible scouting read on him that says he's getting close to MLB ready. You are really cutting away at the risk:reward ratios at that point.

meh... who cares at this point if most of it is coming out of the 2012 baseball budget (which, admittedly, it may not be).

Last year of uncapped spending with a ton of money unspent from this year. I personally don't care if they spend 40M. It looks like that money is just going to go unspent if they don't get Soler.

Holy [expletive], they have to spend money at some point, Kyle.

I am really nervous about this announcement. I hope Theo has the type of negotiating relationship where he just said "whatever the top bid is, we'll beat it by x amount."

For what we're doing(rebuilding) and what our payroll is currently(low and about to be lower) there's no amount of money for Soler, that I'll be pissed about. Last chance to add a top 50 prospect for just cash. He HAS to be ours.
