Sure.

Okay, give me a few minutes to check with them.

*a few minutes pass*

They say they'll go to 46. Can you beat that?

if I tell you I'll do 48, but it requires you to sign right now, will you?

I trust Theo not to get caught up in the sparkle and evaluate talent qua talent and not as the next shiny toy. If the Cubs get him I don't think it will be for an outrageous sum. I'm hoping the Cubs bid is the highest.

If the Cubs get Solar does the move make Jackson expendable as a valuable trade asset?

Soler is a pure RFer and Jackson is a pure CFer.

I wouldn't think so. He's a RF, Brett plays CF. Only guy right now that can make Brett tradeable is Szczur possibly. Which is probably a longshot anyway.

I don't care if we give him $40 million, get it done. I think this board has been waiting to see how this turns out for months before exploding in anger if we don't get him.

$40 million seems like too much unless we have an incredible scouting read on him that says he's getting close to MLB ready. You are really cutting away at the risk:reward ratios at that point.

Holy [expletive], they have to spend money at some point, Kyle.

rather than spending wildly on amateur talent they could be more fiscally prudent and enjoy their weekends at regional chess tournaments.

But many say that Brett isn't long for CF anyway, reducing his value.

That said, I don't think Soler and Jackson have anything to do with one another in terms of tradability.

And there you have it. You have to draw a line at what you think the player is worth. You can't just say "We'll go over whatever anyone else bids." It doesn't work as a matter of practice.

That would be so awesome. I go to check the pairing sheet at the St. Louis Premiere and Amateur. Second round, Board 2, Kyle Mayhugh (white) vs. Theo Epstein (black). I would squee.

And you just know he's a Najdorf player.

I really don't care what the Cubs spend. If the Ricketts OK it, that's fine by me.

Objectively, I know there's always an opportunity cost.

But honestly, you are right, I'm going to be a little annoyed if he signs somewhere else at any price.

Marlin Bystro with the update

I'm not sure if anything will come out tonight, but I heard the Cubs have the inside track. Unfortunately the number might be huge.

Why is that unfortunate? If it's not eating up the ability to go after FA's next year then whatever.

I mean... it'd be better if the number weren't huge.

Hopefully his buddy Concepcion persuades him to come this way. I wish this would be announced tonight so I can sleep easy and not wait until morning.

well yeah, but it's not like if he gets 40M instead of 30M that I'm going to wish we hadn't signed him. Unless this signing keeps the Cubs from signing someone like Hamels, then I don't see any reason to be remorseful about the amount spent. Of course this is all pending the result.

I'm comfortable with pretty much anything that isn't completely asinine. Theo said himself before the season if you only offer players the exact amount you think they are worth, there's a pretty good chance you're never going to get a single player you want. Got to pick your spots, and Soler fits the plan.

Buster Olney says:

For those asking about Jorge Soler: Other teams think the Cubs are the front-runners... but only the agent, Barry Praver, knows for sure.

I don't why any of us would be concerned about the money. These are some of the smartest guys in baseball, and whether it costs 30 mil or 50 mil, if they felt as though it was too much money and would in any way compromise their plans going foreword, they wouldn't do it. Soler is also multiple years away from the majors and still risky, whereas Jackson will almost certainly be up by the start of 2013, if not sooner.

By the time Soler's ready for the big leagues, Jackson will likely have a full 2-3 years under his belt and we should have a pretty good idea of what he'll be as a player. Also, not long after Soler comes up, Albert Amora (remember him) shouldn't be too far behind, so there is a chance that Jackson could end up a trade chip depending on how things go for the 3. And somewhere between Jackson and Soler there will also be Sczcur and Ha, one or both of which could also end up traded in the not to distant future, assuming that both Soler and Amora end up in the fold. Needless to say, we shouldn't worry about the possibility of Tony Campana as our long term CF.

Can confirm #Yankees are in deep for Soler and - like other interested teams - were told best bid must be today, decision likely tomorrow

Some guy over at Bleacher Nation is reporting we signed him. Don't know how reputable this guy is. He was saying earlier how it was down to the Cubs and one other team..
