Btw... Listening to ESPN St. Louis tonight. They were high on Sveum and said he's the guy to help Castro take it to the next level. Also, they pronounced his name "Shwaim.". And theo is Epstine, not epsteen to them.

"This is my cousin, Artie Leh-VEEN."

"Leh-VINE."

"Yeah, Leh-VINE. And I'm Jerry Cougar Mellencamp."

Hold on. Are people blindly agreeing with the nonsense about the cowboys having accountability?

I'm ignoring it. I just get tired of hearing pointless arguments between the same people in every thread.

*edit*

Though I just read it and got a good laugh. The drug ring cowboys were accountable???

I posted an article on the front page where I explored the walk rates for several of the brewers hitters under Sveum. There's certainly good news there as it backs up ElCaballo's anecdotal claim of an emphasis on controlling the zone.

By the way, thanks for the good read. Sounds like a good coach for Castro to make the next step.

i posted this question in the comment section on the front page article, but, to pose it to the community here, anyone worry about split messages between Sveum and Jaramillo concerning the club's approach to hitting philosophies and instruction? How do you think the two will match/clash?

Same... Typically peeps posting opinions as unassailable facts. And yeah, the "crack wagon" in Dallas was subject to sooo much accountability.

Sveum's, uh, honest, comments on Marmol...

Addressing his current roster, Sveum also said he doesn't plan on changing the role of closer Carlos Marmol, who struggled through inconsistencies in 2011.

"Right now, that's what we have, what we are," he said. "We don't have another closer. There are no other closers. People have to remember, not everybody is made to get those last three outs. … It's not that easy to find guys who can get those last three outs, no matter how ugly it's going to be."

Sveum mostly blamed Marmol's slider for his woes, saying it wasn't breaking as much as in past years.

"(And hitters) don't even have to worry about the fastball, because even if he throws it, it's a ball," Sveum said. "That said, he has to get back to some kind of fastball command."

The last quote about hitters approach to facing Marmol is great. It was pretty clear last year that was the approach a lot of teams took. It will be interesting to see who is chosen for pitching coach and see how they can get Marmol more consistent. Assuming of course that Marmol is still on the team.

Another problem with Marmol, velocity or not is that most hitters and coaches are long since on to his effective wildness and learned that if they just keep their bat on their shoulder they have a pretty good chance of getting on base.

There is nothing wrong with setting a culture of the "Cubs Way" as "We expect you to play each game as if it's the 7th game of the World Series". I honestly don't want to read this whole thread because I feel it's probably full of people talking about stats and hating on Sveum for even talking about stuff like playing hard and so on. And posts about how they know exactly how clubhouses work even though they've never set a foot in one.

I just wanted to say, there is nothing wrong with the people at the top expecting full effort every day from their players, and being outspoken about it. However effective it is you can spend countless hours debating it with eachother for all I care. But you set the culture by actually saying what you expect that culture to be.

You really should read the thread rather than assuming what it knows and making an argument against your (incorrect) assumption. Doesn't reflect that well on you.

They should be fine, as they each teach different parts of the game. Sveum, from the sound of it, focuses on approach, while Jaramillo is more a mechanics coach.

What does the Red Sox under Theo tell you about accountability?

Yeah, that "cowboy up" team wasn't really a tight run ship by any standard. There are all kinds of team cultures that can win.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; it was only with this last season that suddenly they went from being lovable drunken idiots to "EVERYTHING IS OUT OF CONTROL!!!!"

Another nice write-up on Sveum.

http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/7272/sveum-plans-to-focus-on-the-fundamentals

A little more on what Sveum does with the defensive positioning stuff...

“A lot of coaches will get the spray charts from the opposing hitters and then position [the defense] based exclusively off of that,” Epstein said. “Dale, because of his work ethic, his preparation and his attention to detail, he’d get the spray charts then he’d sit and watch the last hundred ground balls on video from each of the opposing hitters. Then he’d sit down with the spray charts and make fine line adjustments based off what he’d seen with his own eyes.”

Asked about Geovany Soto’s arm from behind the plate, he felt that his catcher’s arm strength has improved since his rookie season to rate as average, before then enumerating the Cubs’ pitchers and which ones could be run on most easily.

“Soto’s an average thrower, but I’m sure we were running more on the pitcher,” he said.

A strong clubhouse with accountability and high expectations leads to more wins. A lax clubhouse where guys are free to slack off and blow off the little things leads to more losses. I can't tell you exactly how many wins and losses, so don't bother asking. If you think if it can't be counted then it must not matter, then I don't know what to tell you.

Right this is why Buck Showalter has all those World Series rings and Terry Francona is selling fruit on the side of the road.

Well, being that all of the off field stuff happened AFTER Jimmy Johnson left in 1993, what does that tell you?

It tells me without Jimmy Johnson's guiding hand they all turned to a life of hookers and blow.

That was a pretty good writeup.

Weird to hear Kahrl say good things about the Cubs.

my first thought as well. i mean, i'm sure you could find a transaction analysis from like 2007 saying "good job switching out mediocre relievers between iowa and chicago to keep things fresh," but that's got to be about it.

Lou Gehrig decided to break his consecutive games streak because a teammate congratulated him for making a play at first base that Gehrig realized should have been very easy... and wasn't. Baseball is a long and grueling season. You cant physically go 100% at all times and not have your play suffer for it in the long run. It's just not possible. There is a certain amount of effort that each player can give that will allow them to maximize their value to the club. It's different for each player, especially when dealing with recurring injuries.

Are there players playing below that certain amount of effort that might be able to produce more in a stricter clubhouse? Sure there are.

Are there players who are already pushing themselves a bit too hard and might be able to produce more in a looser clubhouse? Absolutely.

Anybody telling you type of clubhouse or another is inherently better is just wrong. It's all just a balancing act. Figure out what types of players you have and then hire an appropriate manager to tip the scales the way they need to go.

this joker on the score is comparing the personalities of Sveum and Lovie Smith, calling them similar.

huh?
