Obviously, Epstein has a track record that indicates he doesn't believe, for instance, in bunting a guy over early in the game. However, the shear amount of crap Sandberg get's for the same thing is a little perplexing.

He doesn't get crap for mentioning it.

Sure he does. He said it in his HOF speech and people game him crap to the extent of mocking him about his ex-wife's "transgressions". Same thing with his Yahoo Sports articles from years ago.

You are either not paying attention, at all, or lying, because he doesn't get crap for mentioning it. He gets crap for harping on it, making it the centerpiece of what he's about, and actually putting it into practice.

Every media member mentions the concept of changing the culture, David Kaplan freaking obsesses over that phrase and can only think about that. There are massive differences.

Look, I'm not trying to say Sveume = Sandberg. They are clearly two different baseball minds.

I just think it's weird that the perception of Sandberg on this site has become this caricature of a grumpy old fart that sends his first baseman to bunting drills and shakes his fist when his hitters take pitches. It's all basically based on what he's said. Then, Epstein says the exact same thing that makes everyone cringe when it comes from the lips of Sandberg, and it's "pandering to the local media".

I'm not implying Sveum is going to start managing the "old school" way. I'm simply pointing out how vastly different the same comment is taken from two different people. And I understand it. It's still kinda funny.

Except you're missing the part where it's not just that.

You're still missing the point; it's not just what is said by Theo and Sandberg. It's also what they actually put into practice. Theo uses platitudes and meatball catchphrases but then actually runs a baseball team intelligently. Sandberg uses them and then actually does what he says.

Holy crap. I'm not saying Sandberg is a sabre-driven manager. I clearly stated a few posts ago "Sandberg does not fall as much on the statistical side of managing as much as most teams in the league would like".

This is actually quite like your situation earlier in this very thread.

how can someone even begin to conclude that I'm attempting to criticize the hire or put into question how he'd be as a manager by pointing out how weird [not bringing a sport coat] is

I can't point out that this is weird?

All I'm saying is that he isn't viewed this way because of things he has said only. He has backed them up with his actions.

There's a sandberg thread in rants. Take this there please.

Sorry, it was about a comment made at the press conference introducing Sveum as the new manager. Since then, it's deformed into a semantic argument that, you're right, doesn't belong here. I personally won't post about it again.

And all I'm saying is you shouldn't pass judgement on Sveum on the kind of manager he is because he didn't bring a sport coat to the press conference. ;)

Sveum harping on defensive positioning when asked by Spiegel a general question about Castro's defense. I like that the positioning stuff is clearly a big deal to him.

The most important aspect of defensive positioning?

Facing the batter as the pitch is delivered.

Agreed, the little [expletive] doesn't play the game the right way.

:beg:

The Chicago Cubs didn't hire new manager Dale Sveum for his recruiting skills but Sveum believes he can give his new team a leg up on signing prized free agent Prince Fielder if they decide to pursue him.

"Yeah, if it ever came to [president of baseball operations] Theo [Epstein] and the Ricketts family thinking that that was the right fit and the right time for this organization I think me being here would definitely help the process," said Sveum, who was introduced as manager Friday during a press conference at Wrigley Field.

Auh, oh. He metioned running balls out.

"Prince and I have a great relationship," Sveum said. "I love Prince to death. It would be nice to have him at first base because of what he brings to the table every single day."

Sveum points to Fielder's work ethic as the type of synergistic impact he's hoping to instill with Cubs players.

"If you can have three or four guys like him on the team then other guys start to follow," Sveum said. "You don't always have the so-called team leader anymore but when you can get three, four, five guys running out balls hard, playing the game then the other five or six guys say 'Hey, I want to be like them. I don't want to be the one guy that's dogging it.' That's why it was nice to have Prince. The other guys knew what would happen if they didn't run a ball out."

If nothing else, I like that this suggests that Prince is still a possibility as opposed to some of the media clowns who would like to have us beleive that The Cubs will be looking like the teams of the mid 90's for the next 3-5 years.

btw - There's a lot of reasons to want Prince other than the leadership crap he's pandering to the media with.

I gotta say, it shocks me that there are so many folks on this board that think the notion Sveum expresses here is a bunch of nonsense.

As long as he leads baseballs out of the park at an excellent rate.

I'm sure he regards it as important. I don't think that's in question, actually. He's answering questions put to him about changing the culture, etc and giving the expected answers. And I'm confident he actually believes those answers, too.

What matters, though, is that he also has a focus on things that actually matter. He is going to get guys to take a more patient approach. He will stress preparation that includes things like defensive positioning based on thorough analysis. That's not getting talked about as much because the press corps isn't asking those questions. But he can answer culture questions all day and tell the press what they want to hear as long as the other things are also stressed to the team.
