Dale Sveum To Manage Cubs

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 17 at 12:12pm CST]

The Cubs will hire Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum to be their next manager, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter). Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun Times hears that the Cubs may announce their next manager as soon as tomorrow (Twitter link) and suggests it will be Sveum. The Cubs offered the managerial job to Sveum yesterday.

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein would not confirm that the team offered Sveum the position, according to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat. However, Epstein said the process is in its final inning. “We’ve got to get the 27th out,” he said.

Yeah, I know theres the massive Cubs manager thread, but now that it's pretty much official, I thunk it deserves it's own home.

In past years, this would have gotten a great big WTF from the masses, myself included but I thunk that theres enough respect for Team Epstein that I for one am very happy with it, especially considering that no only Team Epstein, but Cherington wanted him equally, so there must be something to him, although I beleive he was both teams #2 behind Maddux.

I think Theo has decided to communicate with the Chicago sports media strictly in the language of baseball analogies.

Or specifically just simple outs and innings references to the final out. 6th inning, 27th out, etc. .

This is all but proof that they are talking down to the media and laughing about it later. I couldn't be happier about that.

I like to think that he and Jed have a side bet as to who can keep it up the longest.

As long as its not fishing analogies, I am ok.

Yay. I don't place that much emphasis on managers for the most part but this one has me excited, mostly because it is handpicked by Theo and Co. In one offseason, all levels of management have been upgraded. Now lets work on the actual ballclub.

Ok, who wants to start the thread on finding the next Cubs' hitting, pitching and bench coaches?

I'm still not the least bit excited about this hire. I'm happy that I'm not disappointed. But it's a manager. Get me some players and I'll get excited.

I'm guessing the hitting coach will stay the same and the bench coach will be some old guy.

would Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder look to Chicago as a more feasible landing spot? While the Cubs are unlikely to meet Fielder's salary demands, agent Scott Boras told the media at the general manager's meetings in Milwaukee he would meet with Epstein about Fielder this week.

"One of my favorite people I've ever coached," Sveum said of Fielder. "The way he competes and plays the game as hard as he does every night, you wish you had 25 Prince Fielders.

I just sent B&B that nugget on Sveum and the defensive positioning.

the best thing about hiring this guy is the ability to instantly pick out people who aren't real cubs fans based on the way they say his name

Was sorta the same deal with Quade.

Sveum and Listach are apparently close, so solid bet that the latter stays on in some capacity.
