Both Theo and Dale preech the same thing Ryno gets blasted for. Some other interesting facts:

1)Sveum has been passed on twice for the managerial job in Milwaukee. Kinda scares me but in Theo and Jed we trust.

2)Both Sandberg and Dave Martinez, whom many considered hot choices for manager jobs have yet to land one. While Ventura, Matheny and Sveum, all of whom were not on most peoples radars have jobs.

Yes, they all preech the same thing. Hence the Cubs giving Sandberg any real consideration for the job.

Ryno preaches that ryno should be manager while Theo and Jed preach that he ain't worthy. so that right there is different.

Sveum was on everybody's radar and unlike Ryno he's had major league coaching experience, the other two were not. Sveum has been a minor league manager and coach for two seperate winning teams.

For those interested and in the area:

@BruceMiles2112: It's off-season for wi-fi at Wrigley Field, so I'm at the press box at Starbucks on Addison St. Stop by for #Cubs coffee talk.

Like I said, I trust our management team. Things have just shaken out differently than most have expected.

what is it with old white guys and their boner for ACCOUNTABILITY? i don't understand what they want. like if a guy makes an error he should apologize publicly? or be benched immediately? it all comes off as very condescending/entitled/jealous...like if aramis ramirez doesn't run out a ground ball he needs to be a man about it and tell kaplan he's sorry. because he OWES it to the fans.

I think when the "old school" guys talk about this they mean a player should never dog it or pose for a HR and it ends up being a single, etc. Errors are part of the game and they understand that.

ok, so what do you want when they do dog it? do you really think you're entitled to an apology?

sorry, but it reeks of "that lazy mexican doesn't DESERVE to be playing major league baseball when there are so many scrappy white guys from georgia or whatever that run out pop ups, and the mexicans are just rubbing it in the faces of those that DESERVE to be playing in the majors by not understanding/appreciating what they have been given."

Also, do you really think that most managers just ignore stuff like that when it happens? Do you think its handled only when the manager comments on it?

yeah, that's just not true.

He's right to a degree though. Sandberg only need to utter the phrase "play the right way" and people get up in arms about it.

Obviously, Epstein has a track record that indicates he doesn't believe, for instance, in bunting a guy over early in the game. However, the shear amount of crap Sandberg get's for the same thing is a little perplexing.

Now, time to duck out of this discussion before I get tagged as a blind faith meathead Sandberg backer.

I really thought Sandberg, Francona, Bobby V and Martinez would get jobs before Ventura, Matheny and Sveum.

Will the Sandberg talk ever cease?

Was anyone else surprised to hear Sveum talk as if pitching shouldn't be a concern for this team? He said something along the lines of just getting the guys we have to pound the strike zone. It doesn't sound like he was very impressed with Mark Riggins.

I just thought it was interesting since the talk around here has been that adding quality starting pitching is a necessity.

I'm not sure how legit this excuse is, but 670 had the Brewers PBP guy on this morning (not Uecker the other one) and he was asked why that happened and said that the Brewers had him as one of their favorites but ultimately were worried that the players liked Sveum a little too much and he would let them walk all over him so they brought it someone from the outside.

And then last offseason, he was never a legit candidate because by hiring him, it would be like admitting they made a mistake 2 years earlier by not hiring him then.

Again, it would just be posturing, but that was the excuse given.

He doesn't get crap for mentioning it.

Sveum belongs on that first list. He was a hot candidate. Ventura and Matheny were laughable hires, yes.

Francona is going to take at least one year off from managing, Valentine likely is content just working in broadcasting, and Sandberg does not fall as much on the statistical side of managing as much as most teams in the league would like at this point.

I am surprise that Ventura and Matheny got jobs while Martinez did not (yet). Sveum was a legitimately high ranking candidate though.

Which makes it that much more sweet that it was the White Sox and Cardinals that made those hires.

Maybe I'm remembering it wrong, but I recall him saying something along the lines of already having the talent in place. That it was just a matter of getting them to produce. Sorry, I can't remember the exact quote.

I think it was when he mentioned Dempster and Garza.

Oh, so YOU saw the Ventura and Matheny hirings before, say, Martinez and Sandberg?

Sure he does. He said it in his HOF speech and people game him crap to the extent of mocking him about his ex-wife's "transgressions". Same thing with his Yahoo Sports articles from years ago.
