Sorry, I posted my thoughts in the weekly college football thread. They are more appropriate here.

Zook is gone. Let the speculation begin. The top of my list is Paul Chryst and Todd Monken. Chryst knows the Big Ten, and can bring a pro style system based on physical play which works in the Big Ten. Monken is an Illinois native and can likely bring QB Wes Lunt with him.

I don't want a retread head coach. I want a coordinator from an established program, who can recruit the south and Texas. I'm done with trying to lock down Illinois and Chicago in recruiting, as the best players will still continue to choose ND and Michigan over Illinois. I also want a coach who understands the importance of special teams, playing fundamentally sound football and most of all playing disciplined. Also we should keep Koenning on to run the defense.

How about a head coach who is doing well at a lessor school?

The Turner Gill factor deters me from picking up a guy from the MAC. Sumlin would be number one on my list, but I don't think he is a realistic hire for Illinois. Thomas has indicated he like hiring coaches with experience at the helm so I doubt I'll get my wish.

Hiring coaches(like MLB managers) is more or less a crapshoot, but there are things you can look at that go beyond "Turner Gill was from the MAC, Stay away from the MAC". Gill left Buffalo with a losing record, and one season of note where he lost 6 games and had an insane run on turnover margin(+22!). There were more than a couple people who had serious questions about his true impact at Buffalo. Now, I don't know if there's someone currently in the MAC or other small conference that fits the bill as a worthy candidate, but there's Turner Gills and Nick Sabans and Gary Pinkels and Brian Kellys that come from the MAC and it's ilk, no blanket statement will be accurate.

Hiring a MAC coach isn't in itself a bad idea (see Hoke, Meyer, etc). Hiring a guy who never had a regular season better than 7-5 in the MAC, yeah, that might not be so smart.

Posted in the other thread but for Illinois Leach would be at the top of my list, then Chryst and Sumlin.

I'm really hoping KU can snag Leach. The guy who runs the KU rivals board says if UCLA wants Leach, he's theirs. If they don't, we have a shot.

Sucks that so many solid programs are opening up this year, though. UCLA, ASU, Ole Miss, Illinois, and UNC all seem like more attractive coaching destinations than KU. If we're all pursuing the same guys, I have to figure KU will end up with someone closer to the bottom of its list.

Another guy I wouldn't mind taking a run at is June Jones. But I don't know how available he is.

Leach definitely wants to go to UCLA. UCLA higher ups want nothing to do with his...oddness.

I think UCLA will make an attempt at Chris Petersen, come up short, say they tried for a top tier candidate and get someone like Sumlin. And will be back at this spot in 4-5 years.

Zook was an odd situation. He constantly made bizarre and nonsensical calls in the game, but the program is undoubtedly in much better shape now than it was when he took over, and he ran a clean program, which can't be appreciated enough with the crap going on at PSU and OSU right now.

I just hope the next guy can continue building the program while actually being able to coach football.

Urban Meyer officially agrees to quit on OSU.

Fixed

I don't understand the Urban Meyer criticism. I think the reasons he left Florida were valid. I also think it is very possible that he has a better plan for health and family going forward.

I don't have a problem with the reasons he had for leaving Florida. I think the way he kept wavering was a little sketchy. Resigning, then coming back with a leave of absence then resigning again less than a year later left him with a label as a serial quitter.
